FAREWELL AGAIN MAGICAL OAXACA….

Last goodbyes and bits and ends to wrap up my visit, close up the condo, start packing, finish projects, set up for my return.  Since my arrival I’ve strove to walk everyday.  Starting out was painful because of my “intermittent claudation”..poor circulation in my legs due to hardening of the arteries.  I would go 30 -50 yards and half to stop for a 10 minute break then repeat when the pain returned another 50- 90 yards down the road. …and so on.  Yesterday I took the bus to the library but then walked around the park then up hill to take some photos.  I never walked up hill here unless it was necessary…and yes I did have to take a break BUT it wasn’t the pain in my legs but just out of breath…I had 2/3 of my right lung removed due to “Valley Fever”.  So when I did reach the top it felt good.  I walked all the way home with NO pain.  This is a HUGE step for me and gives me encouragement.  I thank Oaxaca for that.   It is a pleasant walking city with lots of sights to take in along the walk.  The city is always changing with the seasons, with the night vs the day, different flowers always blooming, beautiful parks, sunrises, sunsets, perfect weather year round.  I’m not anxious to return to Arizona except to see my family and friends.

OUR NEW SECURITY FENCE WITH CONCERTINA WIRE

CROISSANT OR BAGEL?

Well, I have to go for a walk!  Meeting Kevin for coffee when he finishes his classes at the school.  Kevin lives over in my old place, Los Nogales.  I have played Canasta or Fandango with him at a get together one day last year then saw him at Helen’s party when she moved into the big house in Los Nogales.
I noticed our new security fence as I left.  I ordered a Croissant Tostada Francais …thinking it would be a Croissant?  Kevin came in from school as I received my order.  He takes Salsa lessons!  Like Sandra did.  Next year I’ll can introduce them.  I admire that and at my age…WTF..I could use the exercise. Kevin came over to my place to see what it was like.  He put his name in for future vacancies.  I added him to the list for Deke when anything comes available.  Kevin lived in Mexico City for a long while before coming here.  He still entertains other places but he does dance the Salsa and he speaks excellent Spanish from what I gather.  He is younger and has lots of choices of where to live.  I was going to the Llano Market but don’t need to buy anymore before I leave.

Saturday I started packing and assembling notes of “things to do” when I return.  Then I organized another list of money spent here for here and money spent here for when I return…along with my tax filings (I already filed for free from here on my computer…and got my State and Federal Refund…all $90 deposited in my account) Ah the new millennium, what a change from the old. Some good some bad. Change is good.

POPULAR POTATO CHIP PLACE WILL GO THROUGH 300# OF FRESH POTATOES A NIGHT!

So about 6 pm I headed for the Zocalo and an Art Exhibit.  I took some photos of the Easter decorations.  Everyone was in town for Holy Week.  I ended up at the Gourmand Deli.  I stopped there a couple days ago and felt I had to try it before I left.  Deke told me about the cheese selection they offered in the Deli to go and when I asked about the Feta I saw on the menu the owner came out to help me.  It was the same women that sold me those delicious Home made Turkey Sausages I bought at the Market last month!  I went back for more but couldn’t find her again. Now I know where to go.  I had a Reuben Sandwich good but not impressed.  I took half to go and headed back when the rain was still going…more of a drizzle.

There was an interesting band about ready to play at the Zocalo when I arrived so decided to see what they offered. Mexican Water-boy’s “If I Were a Fisherman” ..Chairs were set in rows for this and were full…but the rain was threatening as the band started…STOP…the sound man said the rain was shorting out the electric accordion…so he switched to the violin and the band’s opening number amazed me…If I were a Fisherman by the Waterboys from Ireland.  The Rocket 88’s used to play that when I would walk in at Warsaw Walley’s Blues Bar.  It was like Hail to the Chief…they were regular customers at Dave’s Fish House…that’s what they called my restaurant just down from Wally’s  in Phoenix.
So I videoed the performance and was anxious to see what they would play next.  Alas, it was not to be…the sky opened up with a real rain…thunder rolled in the distance…had to think twice before I realized what it was…been a long time.

DINNER

GOOD SALES LADY…HE BOUGHT A LOT

The temperature dropped. A short sleeve shirt, sandals, and shorts caused me to shiver…I headed for Importando next door and had a glass of wine with Tequila to warm me.  When the rain let up I headed for another concert at the Pablo Cultural Center next door.

That was packed and an Easter Concert. Oaxacan State Choral Orchestra  I went last year when it was held in the Zocalo with the Tuna wandering Minstrels accompanying The Oaxacan Choral Orchestra.  Videoed that on my past blog.  The concert was fantastic with such a variation of instruments and the choir was wonderful. I didn’t see the special lady that had played last year but in the end the Conductor gave a speech to thank everyone and mentioned special guest in the audience…she was the first he mentioned and she stood for applause.Last and Thanks I chased her down last year and after introducing myself asked to take a photo with her family…she refused. Then on the air flight to Oaxaca from Phoenix this year she was with me.  I approached again to ask if she remembered me..but my Spanish wasn’t good enough and I was afraid she would start to think she had a Stalker at 90 years old, so excused myself.
I stopped to say hi to Peter, Mike, Karen, and there was Halina.  We walked home together and stopped to take a photo of some flower display before parting.

POLISH WALL FLOWER

I crossed the street with a group of about 20 people with yellow T shirts on with luminous writing on the back.  I thought they were a family until I read the writing…something about a Walking Club or group.

I was in no pain so fell behind and tried to keep pace until my ankles started hurting…and I was on my street, said hello to my neighborhood restaurateur.  He finally put up a sign…on our building..but tastefully done. We chatted  and I told him goodbye until June 5th…bought my ticket with the help of American Airlines Frequent Flyer …used to be you paid in miles…now you pay in miles and cash for all the surcharges…$100 and they would only honor F Flyer miles to Mexico City even though I paid over $700 to fly to Oaxaca round trip on American…twice!  So I had to buy another round trip from Mexico City to Oaxaca for another $100 but I hit the wrong web site that was phishing as Interjet airlines…so they charged me a service fee to book…and because it was in Spanish only…I booked the wrong flight time on my return so after paying for it, I realized what I had done and went to the real airline site and tried to change it …no problem…just another $50 fee to change a $100 ticket.  My Frequent Flyer free flight has now cost over $250…so I save around $400. Take what you can get.

Sundays are nice and quiet but there are a lot of people in town.

A BUDDING ENTREPRENEUR SELLING HIS CREATIONS

MORE SANTA SEMANA DECORATIONS

I am going to meet Halina, Barbara and my future Spanish teacher Gadie this afternoon to go out and eat ….of course. Well our signals got crossed…I think I went to the wrong Cathedral and was 10 minutes late.  I looked around and walked around but ended up at Berlina for a Real Reuben Sandwich and Salad.

Today was drop the laundry, pick up the Matted Photos, Hang them, go to the library and have lunch at the Bakery. Leaving the library I encountered Usi…my Compadre who speaks as much English as I do Spanish. We managed to have a brief conversation as he was climbing down a ladder from hanging Easter decorations for Theresa the Owner of Los Mariposas.  He is my Number One Mexican…classy, hard working, intelligent, unstoppable, with integrity to the max.  Normally he is the first person I visit when I return…but this year it felt awkward but he was genuinely happy to see me as I was him.

BELIEVE IT…A BROCCOLI SOURDOUGH SANDWICH WITH GOAT CHEESE…GOOD.

I REALLY DIDN’T NEED THIS BUT WON’T BE BACK FOR A WHILE..CHOCOLATE…UMMM

It rained again on the way back home to pick up my laundry.  I can’t do it that fast and I have a Washer Dryer at home??  It weather cooled with the rain so I sat on my “patio” to read as the Sun set….and wave to all my fans from the balcony.

I thought you may want to see the photos I took that are now hung on my walls. Mexican Graffiti Art, World Heritage Icons, and the family that is still around.

I packed today then stopped for healthy luncheon.

Even the dogs are dressed for Easter.

He gave her 20 Pesos for that Popsicle and she counted back his change.
My last day so I took a long walk to the Library then to the Bakery for a treat before returning home.
I decided I should read my “list” to discover I forgot the Boarding Pass!
When I returned I spent over 1/2 hour on Live Chat with a representative of Interjet Airlines to discover I was NOT on their reservation list because I had not made the reservation with them but American…even though they are flying the plane American assigned to me.  All I got was a phone number that put me on HOLD for 20 MINUTES before I went crazy listening to the looped recording about how much it cost me if I go over my baggage limit. I hung up.  Hope I got a flight tomorrow. Done with Blogs for a couple months!  Adios Amigos and Amigas.

BILL’S BIRTH DAY BLOWOUT…FINAL FAREWELLS AND FINISHING LAST MINUTE PROJECTS BEFORE PACKING FOR DEPARTURE.

Richard dropped his bag of goodies for me to store in his absence until he returns next year.  He bought my extra Oaxaca Cap too.  We got a cab to take us to our pickup point for the party.  Kevin, Margo, Kathleen, Teri , Katrina, and Carl joined us and we were off to Bill’s 75th Birthday Blowout.
Bill Pumphrey was one of the first people I met on arrival in Oaxaca and has been a good friend since. I attended another of his parties 4 years ago but this was the big one.

The Hotel he contracted with for the banquet room, entertainment, food, and facilities was a little behind when we arrived.  Don and Pat showed up as did Pierre and Hans, Alan and his wife (just back from 6 weeks in Vietnam) Michelle,Peter …well most of the people I knew or were acquainted with. Bill poured everyone Mezcal when they arrived and the socializing began.

We started the party with Bill trying to open up the Pinata of Donald Trump (popular Pinata in Mexico these days).Give it your best try Bill. (click to see).  Bill passed the baton after about 5 tries…he was blindfolded in the beginning….until anxious participants beat the hell out of the Pinata and candy flowed…along with stick on messages for everyone that said ESTAMOS UNIDOS EN CONTRA DE TRUMP…I think means we stand united against Trump.

A lot of recent deportees that had been born or lived in the US illegally since childhood while speaking fluent English, working or College students and fell under the “Dream Act” of Obama’s that gave them the opportunity to stay and become legal…were sent back under Trump to a country they didn’t even know.  Many had relatives that lived in Oaxaca so they were returned to Oaxaca.

The band played while people  danced and the drinks flowed and “botanas” were passed around to nibble on.  A Salad was served followed by a Chicken Dish then Birthday Cake. Then the DJ albums consisting of everyone’s requested songs started playing and the DANCING continued until the party ended.  A Mexican couple took Kevin and I back to our neighborhood and we went our separate ways returning home.

I slept late today and had Shrimp Ceviche on Avocado for Breakfast…delicious.

I walked through the Zocalo and stopped at a huge Book Fair

but not proficient enough in Spanish so continued over to meet Barbara for lunch at the bakery.

Had a great meal…Bhan Mui Vietnamese sandwich and she had Avocado Toast and we split the best Carrot Cake I’ve ever eaten.

Best Carrot Cake…LOUSY PHOTO

I walked back home and was getting ready to meet Sara from Phoenix at the Library when she wrote that the library was closed so she took a taxi home and would like to meet tomorrow but has another lady to meet for an apartment.  She was considering subletting mine.
I already had dinner plans with Halina and Barbara at Biznaga so took a taxi there and we had two hours of eating Pork Ribs, Tenderloin Tips, and a Steak Mole…with some wine, beer, Margaritas and a Pina Colada.

Oaxaca is now into Holy Week so Flowers are out and events everyday until Easter. We stopped at the Zocalo on the way home to listen to a  Salsa Band , then went our separate ways.  It was a splendid night and day.

I am now safe and secure with a security fence around the roof and my wall.

I did nothing today…never left the house.  Sara emailed to let me know she took the apartment offered her in Tule…an hour out of the city.

I tried to get to bed early and rise early for Pool on Wednesday.  Didn’t work.  I guess I’ll have to set an alarm to manage that.
I did get out of the house and have coffee at the Bakery today. While passing through the Zocalo, I debated adopting a Squadron of Doggies.

Then stopped at the Oaxacan Public Library to photo the aerial view of my Old place, Los Nogales, My new place, and the Zocalo.

The photos weren’t great but you get the idea. I was taking a photo of the lighted floor.  Library was nice, and they had a play room for the children.

When I arrived, Steve, one of my Canadian friends was just finishing when I showed up.  We chatted a bit.  He may move down from New Brunswick in another month.  He leaves in 2 weeks to return but like me but is hesitating to buy the ticket!  No one likes to leave.  I have too.

When Steve left I felt like I had to try the famous Pizza’s they make here but wasn’t hungry after Cappuccino and the gluten free Chocolate Tart I had…pure Chocolate…pure Joy!  I ordered the house Pizza to go and had a Natural Kefir…made on premise and also really good.

It was hard to take the Pizza home…at least the whole thing…and all for $5.75

Tonight I WILL SET THE ALARM.  Deke, the condo Manager who just returned from a month in Merida and Cuba, is coming over for coffee and Pizza in the morning.  That is good incentive to wake me…I’ll dream Pizza in my Mind

Deke came by for Coffee and Pizza this morning.  I told him about my problems with the photo matting I had done and I was going back to do some more and wanted to change the Mounting and Matting of the photos.  He went with me and explained the whole thing and I can pick them up Monday.

The same home where DH Lawrence wrote one of his books around 1921?

It was such a pleasant day today.  The weather has cooled to perfect!  I took the bus to the library so I could drop off some donations for there Garage Sale to raise money to complete the roof.  I stopped at the ATM to take out some more money…now at a higher rate since the dollar went down.  I didn’t have enough to pay for the Matting and no Credit. Easter Decorations were up everywhere for the Holy Week Ceremonies. All church doors were left open.

I walked up the mountain to the North end of Pirfirio Diaz to take some photos then down to the Bakery again!

Nice coffee break then home.

My friend SVEN posted his 8 seconds of fame when he was interviewed on Fast Money last month.
WE ARE SO PROUD OF HIM…even if he left us for the bright lights of LONDON?  I think I’ll close this Post for now…Love David

HOME CONCERT..GOODBYES…POOL

Saturday Richard came over to see my place and meet for the Home Concert, first of Monthly gatherings in different homes with different entertainers for a small fee that goes to the musician.

Richard took time out of his hectic schedule to impart his wisdom as a stellar businessman to advise this talented lady on how it would be to her advantage to promote herself.

We arrived just in time to a small group of 20 people and a wonderful Jazz/Folk/Blues singer with an acoustic guitar.  We had a brief break for wine and snacks the host provided and at 6 pm we closed down and Richard and I went out for drinks,

Art gallery,

dinner

TUNA STEAK, SALAD, MASHED POTATO

, music,

more drinks…

We met an interesting couple visiting Mexico.  She lived in Copenhagen and he lived in Southwest England.  Young couple that had arrived in Oaxaca from the Nude Beach at Zipolete and were leaving after 5 days here to visit Mexico City.  I left for home and retired as soon as I arrived.
Sunday I returned to the couple that makes such good food to sell…limited menu but quality take out food….Lasagna, Paella, Pork and Bean (it cooks for 24 hours), Fish in wine sauce with Mushrooms, Ceviche, Empanada Spinach or Tuna.

I arranged Happy Hour at Sabor Sabe, a nice Mexican restaurant with a good Bartender.  That is essential for Mezcalinis.  Like a Martini but with Mezcal and Jamaica, and a couple other things…it did taste good.  Halina and I have a tradition, of sort, that we try to get together and have Mezcalini’s when we first arrive and before we depart…and sometimes in between.  Tonight was special because her girl friend Barbara visited Oaxaca with her this year.  Barbara is a wonderful lady so this Happy Hour was a Special one.  I thought they were leaving soon but it turns out we have time for another Mezcalini Happy Hour in another couple weeks.
HALINA AND BARBARA PAYING RESPECTS TO MANUEL FIALLO…NAMED MY STREET AFTER HIM.

Today I dropped my shirts off to be laundered and pressed.  That is something that costs about the same in the US.  Then took the bus to Sam’s Club to stock in the condo a bit so it will be easier on my return.  It was a hot day…in the high 80’s.  I had some of the Pork and Beans Casserole then around 5pm, I walked up to pick up my Oaxaca Baseball Caps I special ordered.  Tomorrow they will be ready.  BUT YOU SAID…careful David…Monday and it is Tuesday evening…but no problema Manana is Buenos….it was a nice evening for a walk.  The Temperature went down with the sun.  I hope to visit the Stamp Museum tomorrow…be the first visit since I returned.  Awesome museum and art gallery.
I have been enduring a security construction crew next door on the roof building a mura or wall around the roof.  We did have a break in to the compound and some tools and stuff were stolen so the Landlord changed to a double lock security on the gate and  adding the wall to keep people from scaling it and entering the compound.  If they do, they have to go out the same way they came and they couldn’t take much up and down that ladder.  The noise has been disconcerting but now I think they have actually made it easy for them to enter on to my back porch and come in through the kitchen.  Now I have to lock my kitchen door??  Well I’m having some great Lasagna I bought Sunday with a great Mango Margarita, no salt as it’s bad for you.  The Spinach Empanada was a great snack and the Pork and Beans was great comfort food and was gone immediately...Manana.

I did get my Baseball “Oaxaca” Caps the next day on my return trip from the Stamp Museum.

These are Stamps from the different Provence of Spain with the Senoras in the dress of the Provence

These are Stamps from the different Provence’s in Oaxaca that produce Coffee Beans

These are where the Stamps are stored…old, new, from every country in the world with every theme imaginable.  They are presented behind glass drawers that slide out from the vault they are arranged in.

The Vaults, about 12 in all , are categorized by themes of countries, continents, sports, plants, etc.
I stopped by the new Food Court I tried the other day just to see how they are progressing….much nicer but no customers!

When I left to return home, one of the Main Thoroughfares that is seldom without traffic…had NONE and there was NO Roadblocks….It is the HEAT.  It may get into the 90’s now but we are a mile high and the UV ratings were EXTREME.  Which is 11.9 +  the Maximum but they don’t state the number…just +…so it could be 15 for 50…but you stay out of the sun.  Oaxaca’s UV ratings are EXTREME most of the time even when it is cool.
I met Tomas that evening for dinner at Tres Bistro this time.  He had some fish Tacos and washed them down with a few Martinis and I had the Salmon washed down with a few wines.

Tom waved Goodbye till next year.

Thursday and it was our last Dominoes game at the library.  I , of course, led the pack winning almost every game and clinching the Tournament until next year.  Richard leaves this coming week so that was the end of Dominoes without enough players.

There are a lot of Volkswagons in Mexico.  They have been manufactured here for years and Mexicans are great Mechanics.  They love their cars, especially VW’s.  Many are vintage models dating back to 1960 and have Chome touches added along with modifications.

Friday I finally made it over to the Pool Hall through a bunch of little shops that surrounded the building.  I finally found the entrance to a Mattress Company then a stairway leading up to the two floors above that housed a very nice Pool, Card, Snooker Hall with well maintained tables, and Ques.
The Gringo group that play here are GOOD.  They use special Racks and the balls are imported from England….they keep them along with professional Que Sticks and extras for guests in a locker.  They play three times a week.

LOOKS LIKE A LINE UP…I THINK RICHARD LOOKS GUILTY.
My “lucky streak” carried over from Dominoes and my first game I beat Richard…then the second game I almost beat Bill….had none left and missed the Eight Ball for Bill to put in the pocket and win the game.  I will return.
I left to get some Yogurt and the way home and as I was cruising through the Zocalo I spied two Senoritas selling there Textiles in this HOT SUN…they covered themselves from the Sun as I took their Photo…Then I heard a yell…It was Darcy with Steve, another Canadian…I sat for a bit until Pat, Darcy’s sister showed then picked up my Yogurt and headed home.
It was hot in the house too so later in the evening I returned to the Zocalo to have a wine and read….then a second wine and Chicken and Pasta.  Just as I was leaving, Hector my friend who had just got off work stopped by and we caught up on things.  He is doing well and looked good.  I think getting back to work put him back on track.  Much more jovial.

Today I picked up some shirts I had pressed and cleaned, then ventured up a block and bought some Homemade Lasagna and Ceviche to take home.  He had some Fish Veracruz I couldn’t resist.
I stocked it in my overflowing Refrigerator and am now preparing to go to Bill’s 75 Birthday Blowout .  Richard is stopping by to drop off some things for storage until next year and we will take a cab to the pick up point.  He didn’t get in early so the Hotel Van is full and he will continue to the Party in the Taxi.

ST PADDY’S DAY….AND THE FOLLOWING WEEK

Helen offered to take me out to dinner her last night in town. It was St Paddy’s Day.  The Oaxacan State Band were playing at the Gazebo in the Zocalo, reminding me of summer concerts in Whitefield New Hampshire when I was a wee lad.     We went to Tres Bistro and had my usual Salmon while Helen had the fresh Red Snapper. Helen enjoyed a dessert while I enjoyed the complimentary Chocolates.

It was St Paddy’s Day but no one seemed to know it or care.  The Phoenix St Paddy’s Day Parade has a contingent of San Patricios riding horses and wearing Sombreros along side of Mexicans.  The San Patricios , led my Captain John Reilly fought for Mexico against the US in the Mexican American War.  They were all captured and hung in Mexico City.

The next day Helen woke me around 6 pm because she couldn’t exit the new gate lock without a key.  She was worried about a taxi to the airport…one greeted her on the other side of the gate and helped with her luggage.
I did nothing that day except a brief walk.

Sunday I did go out and about to a Clandestine Food Stall in an alley where this elderly couple lived.  Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon they sell homemade Pork and Beans, Paella, Empanadas, Lasagna, and Pastries to go. I believe they are retirees from Santiago, Chili?   I bought the Lasagna and a bowl of the Pork and Beans.
That afternoon took a taxi to Casa Colonial for another Jazz Concert. The music was good, the drinks were good, Bill and his Brother were enjoying their life of leisure,Halina, Margo, and Carol had front row seats, Teri joined Halina, the band played on, John found a seat , then Tadeo and Will had their usual seats,….LISTEN TO HER

The singer and band was very good but all Jazz, and no Blues make me ready for bed.  Zooey, a friend, was there and drove me back to the Zocalo where I walked home. There was another band playing.SEE THEM DANCE

I had the Lasagna when I arrived…it was very good and I tasted the Pork and Beans that was also good.  Barbara took my photo and I took hers before I left Casa Colonial.

Today was Benito Juarez’s Birthday.  The only president to be honored with a National Holiday so many places were closed except the Textile Museum.  Helen had visited there and marveled on how nice it was.  I hadn’t been this year so decided to do the tour.  It was nice.

Now I get to have Pork and Beans…took 24 hours to make according to the Elderly gentleman that made it.  Took me 10 minutes to polish it off…hmmm good!

Tuesday was uneventful.  This time of year it warms up so afternoons are for power naps..Mexicans call them Siestas.

I blew $3.50 (tip included) on late lunch at one on my favorite Mom and Pop Mexican Restaurants.

Wednesday I dropped off the laundry then I checked out the neighborhood for the location of the home concert that Richard and I were going to on Saturday afternoon.

I THINK THIS IS THE PLACE
Cabouche was close by so I stopped in for another Breakfast…
NICE NEW TABLECLOTHS ADDED A NICE TOUCH

Two Poached eggs on a Corn Tortilla one with Red Sauce and one with Green.  Very good.   I walked down the street to find place where my laundry recommended for pressing clothes.

On my return to home, I found another one that was closer and it was the one I gave up on finding.

This time of day the shadows are more pronounced then at other times of the year.  I also saw some new art work on the side streets that I hadn’t noticed.

The scheduled Dominoes game was cancelled for lack of people…last week it was me.  Milton didn’t make it this week.  I have a lunch engagement with Peter this afternoon so I will get out of the house and try and walk there.  I’ve been very lazy lately. Yesterday the Governor visited the Zocalo…all the roads in and out were blocked with Police in Riot gear.  I noticed one had a bandalier on that was load with tear gas shells.

Darcy was at Importando. I joined him for a Hot Chocolate and a chat.  He said the police did use the tear gas to disperse about a thousand protesters they showed up to welcome the Governor. It was good to see him.  He was sharing his lunch with one of the street urchins that sell gum. I think she was around 9 or 10 and looked like she needed to go on a diet but the way she scarfed down Darcy’s leftovers you wouldn’t know it.

I met Peter at Atila’s a restaurant , cooking school that seats about 10 people but has good food. We both had the Fish…it was good but we were both hungry after so walked down to pick up some bread at the bakery and have dessert there. I saw Peter last summer in Lee, Mass where he resides.  We had dinner then I returned to my cousins in Coxsackie where I was visiting.  We haven’t seen each other since I arrived except for a Church Tour he led that was very interesting.
I told him about Panama and my father doing Basic Training at Ft Jay in NYC before spending 6 years in the Canal Zone.  He too knew people that had organized the Union for the Black workers there and lived in the Zone for over 6 years at a different time.

Well it’s Friday and Adelina will be arriving to clean the condo so I’m off to the Market.  I got some eggs, Spinach, Avocados and a little two drawer storage box to put on top of my cabinet for my keys, wallet and notes.
I stopped on the way back for breakfast at PAN AM that Peter had recommended. Today is “Good Samaritan” Day.  Businesses all over town set up a free Beverage Cart in front decorated with flowers and an attendant to serve you a drink.  The drinks are different but all free for everyone.   You see people strolling along with a drink in there hand…even on the bus. PAN AM greeted me with a free drink.   I never liked the place but haven’t been this year and was pleasantly surprised at the remodel, service, and menu!  I had the Vegetarian Omelette with a Lassi.  Very nice.

I was going to the bus stop and noticed another NEW restaurant Mall of sorts that was still under constructions.  It was group of shops like an upscale food court.  I might try their Happy Hour tonight.  Richard emailed me to tell me he wasn’t feeling good and couldn’t make the concert.  He went to a Doctor and got a shot and was going to take a nap…BUT if I still wanted to go to dinner, he is sure to be OK.  I informed him that 2 weeks without Dominoes has addled his brain. The concert is tomorrow night but we could meet at this new place tonight.

Richard met me there at the bar.  I had been early and still hadn’t received my drink or Tapas order.  I think I was the first customer for the bar and the cook. The owner John came over and after getting me my glass of wine, introduced me to the Mall Manager Fernando.  Richard nor I liked the “Special” wine so ordered off the Menu but because it was the first day opened, we decided to get a Pizza at one of Richard’s favorite places. We stopped at a gallery on the way.

It was OK and we got a chance to catch up.  We decided to visit Luna y Sol for a last drink before parting.  Emilio and Natalie his wife, the owners, were there.  That ends this last week.

OPERA, DINNER WITH TOM,LUNCH WITH HELEN AND HELEN AND GINNY’S FAREWELL.

Saturday I arrived at the Opera House and was standing in line when a lady sold me an extra ticket explaining her friend couldn’t show up.  I though it a “Ruse” just to get to know this handsome man but it wasn’t.  She also had her husband with her.  Good seats for La Traviata.  I almost fell asleep before the first intermission so decided to call it a day and return home.

I relaxed and watched a 5 star movie that I would not have given one star to.  Sunday I went to Pochote Market, had a Tamale and bought some Yogurt before stopping at the Bakery for bread.

It was being “gutted” and they were in the process of moving across the street.  I returned home.

Monday I had breakfast at one of my favorite little Cafe’s then returned to the Bakery and was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful new place these two budding entrepreneurs had created.  These two young Spaniards, I believe, got their education in France and were not only great Pastry Chefs but innovative, creative, imaginative, businessmen who had a knack for knowing what was needed and filling the void. I had some coffee and a Banana Muffin before leaving with my Bread.

The streets in the Center had been blocked off for a Student Protest.  They were peaceful and I don’t know what it was about but re-routed traffic to bumper to bumper around the area. I noticed on my street someone had used tomatoes to fertilize the trees all down the avenue…at least 15 trees.

That evening I met Tomas, my old neighbor at Los Nogales, for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants El Catedral.  Tom had reserved “his” table that he eats at when he goes there 3-6 times a month.  The Maitre ‘de knew and seated him and the waiter had his Martini before I even looked at the menu.  We had a really nice dinner starting with Oaxacan Tamale with Creme and Cottage Cheese that was more like a dessert…so good.  I had the Salmon and Tom had the Rib Eye Steak.  We walked back until we separated when we got into our neighborhood.

Today I think I’m having dinner with Helen.  If you wonder why we all eat out so much, you have to consider Oaxaca has hundreds of really good restaurants from the little Mom and Pop to large Gourmet…with 3 courses running from $2-$12 on average…???? So what would you do?
Helen and I decided to try a “new” Argentine pizza restaurant.  We each ordered Empanada
then different Individual pizzas to share.  It was OK and we had a nice time.

I over slept and missed my domino tournament. I think I’ll make an effort to go shopping today…last big one then I have to eat everything in the house before I leave in less than a month. I restocked my Gin and bought some cheese and hummus for Helen’s going away get together tomorrow.

I slept late again then left around 3 pm for the going away party at Helen’s ….it was a fun time and until next year!

MY MURAL GOT A HAIRCUT

Well Helen got bumped as a stand-by and missed her flight so is now a guest at my home.  I left for breakfast while she worked on the computer and found another flight for tomorrow.  The library had a presentation about the Learning Center for poor students from surrounding villages to attend in Oaxaca in preparation for college or just to gain “learning skills”. Very nice.  I will attend their Open House next week.

HAPPY ST PATRICK’S DAY

MICHELLE’S PARTY and COMIDA, HELEN’S SORTIE.

I stopped on the way to our pick up point for departure to Teotitlan Del Valle for Michelle’s annual get together, for my Americano coffee.  Then wandered through the park to a nice park bench in the sun.

A Mexican Drum and Bugle Corp were practicing.  They were very good.  Then I spied Ginny and Helen and joined them and others.  Only one van showed so it was a bit crowded but we all arrived safely at Michelle’s home on the side of a Mountain.

MICHELLE TURNED ON THE FIREWORKS FOR US

She greeted us and I introduced Ginny and Helen then we got comfortable with a glass of wine and started socializing.  There were around 40 people total and the lines was forming for appetizers.  The Michelle’s Mariachi’s arrived and started playing. They were very good. (click to see)
We had settled at a table with two guys, an elderly lady, and three single ladies, one from Korea was a Pharmacist and had a phone cover to prove it.

 She was very fetching.

We chatted and I wandered to take a few photos but it was dark so not many photo ops for my camera.

ALLEN IS A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER

The meal was a buffet so we took turns going to the kitchen and standing in line.  I enjoyed the meal but can’t say I knew what all it was…very tasty.  The dessert table was set up right next to us so I was one of the first on that.  We toasted the evening with some Mescal Michelle poured us. Then later hopped back on the bus to Oaxaca where the 3 of us hailed a taxi and went home.

MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR AND COOK ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

MIDNIGHT SNACK….I slept well and don’t remember much about Sunday but Monday
I decided to get out and went to Terranova , a nice restaurant in the Zocalo for the Daily
Comida, a nice soup with Baked Chicken and Rice with Coffee and Cake after..$4.

Tuesday was drop off the laundry and a walk to the library for some exercise then I stopped at Sabe Sabor Restaurant for their Comida.  Nice Cauliflower and Spinach Soup with Teriyaki Pork Chop, Vegetable and Rice, then homemade Banana Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream and coffee.  $3.

Wednesday was another do nothing day.  I think I went out for a short walk .  Be early then out the door Thursday to try and Win another Dominoes game.   I took last place again but Michelle was waiting to drive me out to her home for a Comida at her house that she was preparing for her house guest and the two of us.  It was a nice afternoon and a fantastic lunch with BBQ Pork Ribs, a nice Spinach and Mango Salad with Goat Cheese, Corn Bread and a Baked Potato.

It was raining a bit when Philipe arrived to drive me home.  When we reached the outskirts of Oaxaca it was dark, raining steady, and traffic backed up.  I slept real well that evening.

Helen was waiting with Ginny her friend for Ron, another retired winter visitor, and me to do an excursion into the country.

I arrived at Helen’s…the little door at the left of the photo…neighborhood has gone downhill since I moved out.  Roberto arrived at about the same time with Ron and we loaded the car and off we went.

Our first stop was the “Monument”.  Benito Juarez, President of Mexico (shortest President of any in the world, ever) was from the area we were headed to, the Sierra Norte.  He was Zapotec, one of the largest of 17 groups of indigenous people in the state of Oaxaca.  Chiapas has 10 groups and Michicocan has 7 I think.  Benito Juarez was separated the church from the State and expropriated all Church property .  Priests were not allowed to wear there vestments outside of the church and had to return the wealth they stole from the people. Needless to say Benito was popular.  I visited his house in Oaxaca last year.
We started climbing mountains and going up up and up some more. We finally stopped at Colibri Restaurant for Breakfast.

We all had Mexican Hot Chocolate.  I had a Mango Yogurt drink with Ron and we all had fried eggs except Helen had Huevos Rancharo.   Now we were ready for the Adventure.                     Roberto drove around hairpin curves and kept climbing into the clouds until finally we reached a Magical Town of 2000 people called…Capulalpam where we parked and roamed around while our guides were getting ready to take us on a tour.

Our guide, Lionel, took us through the Gate of Happiness to the Church that was build in 1559 and still had some the original plaster with dyed designs and depictions.

He explained that when the state took over the church property many of the churches were emptied of their Art work and carvings.  Many were stored in Parishioners homes then they were placed in remaining churches that were still used to say Mass…like this one that had Carving from over 8 churches along it’s walls.

We had a truck waiting to take us to a Holistic Health Clinic further UP the road.

There we saw a treatment room where the patient was rubbed with medicinal plants and a diagnosis was given.  Then they may or may not go into the Sauna with or without clothes for another treatment…after maybe resting or getting a massage.  I bought some Jojoba Shampoo at there dispensary before continuing the tour to a Mira Vista , look out point on the summit.

I excused myself to start the trek back to the truck before the others.  I knew it would take me longer and a few stops back up the hill.

Now we were ready to eat dinner so returned to the car and headed back to a restaurant for Fresh Trout.  We arrived with a large crowd of families with their children, eating and playing along the river.  The wait was 20 minutes or more so we decided to try another Trout Restaurant down the road.

We left the beautiful area and shortly  we were at the other place.

Helen wasn’t feeling well so stayed in the car while Ginny, Ron and I had some beer, mescal, and Fresh Trout.  I was so hungry, I ate it before remembering to take a photo.
Roberto drove us home and dropped me off on my street where a Wedding was taking place.
I arrived to my nice clean home with flowers on the table and a new, slightly used bedspread.

OPERA, JAZZ CONCERT, PHOTOS, SHROVE TUESDAY, DOMINOS..

Well I did it again…bed late, lousy sleep, knew I’d fall asleep in the Opera, so stayed home.  That evening I went to Biznaga for dinner.

TRAVELERS I LOVE..LEFT PATAGONIA ARGENTINA 2005 ON THEIR WAY TO ALASKA…MARKED THEIR TRIP ON THE MAP ON THEIR BUS

I choose the Pescadora Majo…Mahi in a roasted pepper sauce on a banana leaf with Rice.  Then an Apple Tart with Walnut Ice Cream…and Grand Marnier.

It was a beautiful Saturday night with everyone out to have fun.  Stretch Limos, Weddings, firecrackers and rockets everywhere, Carnival in the street, Music coming out of every club…mostly great Jazz.

POOR ATTEMPT OF SELFIE WITH  PHONE…NO MORE PHONE PHOTOS.

I got back early so stopped in the neighborhood store to purchase some shelving I had wanted for Pot and pan storage and a makeshift bedside table for the guest room.  It took me almost an hour to buy it…had to go to the warehouse and get it…then it was a higher price than stated…I paid it.  When I got home it took me an hour and a half to put this plastic piece of junk together…but it worked fine.

Today I was out of the house just after 10 am (earliest in a month), caught my bus and was at Llano park in time to watch the DANCER DO THEIR EXERCISE.  It was a beautiful morning and quiet on the streets.

A short fifteen minute walk and I was at the Organic Market. I got some fresh eggs, beets, tomatoes, cabbage and limes…too late for the Kale and goat cheese.

I’ll have to leave earlier next time.

DANCERS STILL AT IT

I returned to the bus stop and the dancers in the park hadn’t stopped in the last 40 minutes! I returned home to check on an ABC app that would allow me to watch the Oscars live so Helen and her friends could join me and bring dinner.  I got the app but ABC doesn’t broadcast live to Mexico over the Internet.  Helen and I made a date for Tuesday dinner and Michelle and I made a date for Wednesday Lunch.
I think I will join Richard at Casa Colonial Bed and Breakfast at 4 pm for an outdoor Jazz Concert. It was fantastic.  A five dollar admission to hear one of the best Jazz bands in all of Mexico. They are a mix and play extremely well together.   The GUITARIST…not the base.  Lots of friends there.  Some I haven’t seen since last year.  Richard was hiding in the back so I joined him after the break

I had a Hamburger, Margarita and some wine.  I left and caught a taxi home.

This morning I received an email from the manager that the compound was broken into last night and a ladder, bike and some tools were stolen.  They changed the locks but I think they just came over the wall and then opening the gate from the inside.  Now it is double-locked after 10 pm so if that happens again the perp will have to take everything back the way he came.
I went to pick up the photos but it’s Mexico…Manana.  So I working on my Google Photo albums all afternoon and are getting ready to venture out to the Zocalo to read and relax with some Vino Tinto. It is a beautiful Monday evening as I arrived at Importado to the welcome of three of some the best waiters in Oaxaca.  They, (work as a team) had me comfortable with a glass of water and my wine in short time.  I discovered my Canadian friend Darcy arrived back from his visit with his Mom about two days ago.  The report is he was struck by a car but didn’t remember a thing.  I hope to see him soon.  I finally broke down and ordered a steak Medium Rare with Veggies and Potato.

I ended up taking half of it home for breakfast.  The TV was showing an exercise class with Cindy Laufer singing “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” . It was playing while I was pissing in the men’s room. I saw her sing it at the Jockey Club in Phoenix in …I think 1987!  Some male vocalist ought to sing ..Boys Just Want to Have Fun.
I decided to take a Taxi so was passing through the Zocalo to the Taxi Stand when I encountered what I call the Zocalo Band  (click here) playing great music while the crowd danced.  I empathized with one dancer.  Says it all.

The taxi charged me a premium rate for night but it was only 7:30 on Monday.  I questioned it politely but paid gladly…50 pesos $2.50 when we arrived at the gate.  My key no longer worked but Adriana was there to let me in and give me the new High Security Key.  If I want a back up made, I think it will cost me more than usual.  I gave her 4 extra plastic legs leftover from my shelving that I bought and instructed her to club anyone she didn’t recognize that entered the compound and arm the others with the other 3.  We all got a good laugh.  It was another fantastic evening in Oaxaca.

Michelle, who is hosting an annual dinner party of about 40 people informed me she did have two openings if I wanted to invite someone.  I invited Helen and her visiting friend Ginny and they accepted so we will all be attending Saturday and this time (because of the heat) will be starting late in the afternoon so we get to see the glorious stars of Titotican de Valle.  Something I have been looking forward to.  Not the dinner…but to see the stars …it has been over 15 years since I witnessed a Starry Night.
I walked over to the Collectivo Garage for rides to San Martin.

It was about a 10 minute wait before another Gringo showed up with the same destination in mind.  The driver took off and picked up one more passenger on the way.  We arrived in San Martin after about a half hour. The cost $1.25. Phil the other gringo is from Boston and owns a Folk Art store in Oaxaca, has a web site and sells Mexican Folk Art around the world. It is called Viva Oaxaca .
There were a lot of guys that were painted up and dancing around the town with Masks on.STREET DANCERS  Many tourists too.

Larry, the Hiking Leader was there with a group that just completed a short hike from another village to San Martin.

Halina and Barbara were in the park by the Gazebo with other hikers just enjoying the fresh air.

I saw Michelle with a tour group that came out for the afternoon.  We chatted a bit.  I wandered around the town visiting some of the shops. Almost everyone in the village carved these interesting creations out of Copal Wood.

I stopped to visit Miguel Ortega Cruz at his home and shop.

SOME WERE POSING IN A MAKESHIFT PHOTO STUDIO

Everyone was going to eat but it was hot and I saw another collectivo departing so hopped a ride and was home by 2:30 in time to get my Package delivered to my door by Amazon in Kentucky. Hangers for my Photos that I pick up this evening…I hope.  I could not get them in Oaxaca so for $4.50 postage Amazon delivered them from Kentucky to Oaxaca in less than a week.

Now I am meeting Helen and Ginny for dinner in our neighborhood.

GINNY’S  SEAFOOD LINGUINI…NOT MUCH TO LOOK AT

NEITHER IS MY PASTA BALLS

I had the Gnocci with a nutty Creme Sauce.  It was good but just balls of pasta…Helen’s Spaghetti is what I would order next time, the photo I took didn’t come out though.  It was nice eating out on their garden patio.
I had a back up key made and picked up my completed photos that are now ready to hang.

This morning I hung half of the photos.  So easy.  One was crooked but I could easily separate the Velcro and realign it.  I left to meet Michelle at Biznaga for lunch but half way there I realized I left the money that Helen and Ginny gave me for our outing to Michelle’s on Saturday.
I returned and got it then hopped back on the bus.   On the way over to the restaurant, I saw the Bichon Bus from Patagonia Argentina still parked in the same spot while selling T Shirts and a Photo Book of their trip.  Mantu, the husband explained the money they make goes for gas and maintenance which right now the bus needed before they could move on to their ultimate destination…Alaska.  They left in 2005 so it has been 11 years to get to Oaxaca but Mantu said they have been taking their time and enjoying the people they meet and the experiences along the way.  The book documented Mantu, his wife and their child’s journey.  I bought it for $25.  Beautiful Photography and their story in English and Spanish.  Wonderful family.

Michelle arrived just after I did and we had a wonderful lunch and conversation for over 2 hours before returning home.

MARGARITA , MESCAL, PAPAYA JUICE, SOUP…AND SPARE RIBS ON THE WAY.

Today I’m off to try and take my second win in our dominoes tournament at the library, I ended in Second Place so not too bad.

I met Darcy with his sister Pat and her boyfriend Don that made my furniture.  Zooey, an acquaintance for years had joined them.  I see her travels on Facebook.  She was in Hanoi and Southeast Asia this fall.  Her son was over there in Pattaya. Darcy just returned from Canada and had my “Waffles” for me.  I bought them a beer, paid Darcy and returned home.

Today  I left for the Llano Market to pick up some tomatoes and fruit.  I’m am making a soup this weekend.  Finally finished my Lentil soup.  This new soup, burns more calories digesting it then are in it, so the more you eat the more you lose.
I stopped into the bakery to have lunch.  I ordered the Shoku-Iku…Fresh Tomatoes, Onion, Garlic and Pepper…simmered then Eggs on top…so good.

Their bread will be the death of me.  So good…all that they bake…

CORN MUSHROOMS….A FUNGUS THAT GROWS ON THE CORN..VERY HEALTHY…THEY PUT IT IN ONE

I got back just as Adelina was finishing cleaning and spent the evening home.

Today is Michelle’s Dinner party.  I bused out to Walmart and did my weekly shopping.  I’ll make soup tomorrow.  Almost time to go.

DOMINOES, HELEN’S PARTY, MEN’S HAPPY HOUR

Well I maintained the lead for the first 11 rounds of Dominoes then in the round twelve Richard was up by one point…then 13, 14, and 15 I got beat bad to end up in last place the second week in a row.

I did manage to pick-up the photos I had matted and they came out pretty good.  Now I have to figure out how to hang them on the wall.
I left early today, while the maid cleaned the room I got a haircut, then walked over to Berlina to try the Strudel with Ice Cream and Cappuccino.  While I attempted to send a photo of my fantastic Cappuccino, my phone froze.  Just froze.  Could not use touch screen, turn off or delete or anything.

I love my phone and was in a panic so went home after and contacted Google then plugged the phone in as if to charge it but no response.  Google was back to me in 5 minutes with options to cure the problem.  When I went to try them, the phone was fine again.  I scolded it good and sent it to it’s room.
Helen invited me to dinner so I took a walk over and met her at a new neighborhood restaurant where we split a pizza.

She is excited about her move into a real nice home on the same property for her last month in Oaxaca.  She is having a welcome party for her friend Ginny on Sunday.

Today I went shopping, hoping to pickup some ideas for hanging my photos on stucco walls. When I returned Deke, my photographer neighbor was just arriving.  He brought over some leftover Velcro hangers that he uses.  I had enough to hang one and it worked well.

UNTIL MATTING SEPARATED AND  FELL SO WILL HAVE TO RETURN ALL PHOTOS

It’s Sunday and I’m off to Office Depot to pick up more hangers for my photos. I am also buying a printer for my computer.  $20 is fair.  When I return I’ll be ready for Helen’s party.
Well no hangers so I ordered them from the US and will be delivered next week.  The ink for my new $20 printer costs $68!!!
     Helen’s party was nice.

I stopped by the church to atone for my President…on the way home.

COALITION OF MEXICAN AND AMERICAN BUSINESSES AGAINST TRUMP’S INSULTS

The rest of the week was uneventful.  My mounted photo that I hung fell apart in two days so I returned them all to be redone.  They will be ready next week when my hangers arrive.

The weather has been so nice in the Mornings and Evenings I went out to just walk around and ended up having Salmon at Tres Bistro.

Got to see the owners battery operated bicycle like the one I bought.

Wednesday evening was Men’s Night at Casa Charles.  He got a puppy to keep him company and remodeled a bit to accommodate the dog and his neighbors.  It was one of the best Men’s Night we had.  I think there were close to 18 people from Toronto , Fresno, Oaxaca, San Francisco, …artists, Doctor, woodworker, college professor, retired lawyer…well the rest were all retired something…It was a fun evening.  I caught the bus home.

SUPER, SUPER BOWL , MONTE ALBAN, VALENTINE’S DAY

I left to meet Don and show him my plans for my new TV table he was to custom make.  Pat, his lady was there and we chatted while discussing different version of my plan and finally came up with something I would be happy with.

PAT TRYING ON HER NEW NECKLACE

Then Darcy, Pat’s brother showed up all clean shaved and haircut to visit his Mother in Canada the next morning. He bought her a necklace as a gift and Canadian Steve showed up before it was time for SUPER BOWL.
I left for Tres Bistro across the street but was early so I was the only person at the bar. Next came Alfredo the relief bartender and my friend. Then two nice ladies, Claudia and Jane from St Louis. Then Ron, my friend from West Virginia showed and I gave up my coffee for a Beer and some fresh made Guacamole to fortify myself.  Then Lynn showed with her husband Kurt who just arrived in town a day or two before. I started off with some Guacamole off the Superbowl Special Board.

TOSS UP BETWEEN TEXAS BRISKET AND LOBSTER ROLL

The game started but the beginning looked bleak for New England.  The Falcons looked great and by the half time it was 3 to 24 in favor of Atlanta.

The restaurant was filling up with a line out the door.  The Super Bowl Specials looked good so I decided , after a half dozen Oysters

THE SAUCE IS NOT OUR COCKTAIL SAUCE BUT GOOD AS WERE THE OSTERS

to try the Texas Brisket of Beef..sorry…OK I’ll try the Lobster Roll…sorry.  All specials were suspended by half time !  The kitchen was overwhelmed.

I never saw this restaurant so busy ever. The owner came over and apologized .  I did understand having been a Chef and Owner so happily accepted his offer of a Mescal after my bartender also poured me an extra wine.  The game went into overtime and New England stepped up to the plate and walked away with another awesome win.  It was the most fantastic Super Bowl ever.
I floated out of the restaurant and ran into the front man Saul at the door.  We chatted and I asked for a ride home.  He said he lost his car years ago trying to keep up and now rides a bike.  I told him I just bought an Electric battery powered bike and he showed me the Manager’s Electric bike stored in the back. It was awesome.  A little more money than I paid but I haven’t even seen my bike yet. It was supposed to be delivered this month.
The Sunday bicycle riders were out.

The city was booming.  I took a taxi home after one of the best evenings I’ve had in Oaxaca. Ron my friend is convinced that this is also where he will return to after years of searching for home in the winter.  Just like I did.

Monday, Monday….Dinner with Sandra, Lynn, and her husband Kurt at the popular Quinque Restaurant.  I brought some box wine for us as they do not have a liquor license. Just after I arrived so did they.  It was a packed house so we ate upstairs. They had the Shrimp and I had the Fresh Shark.  It was all good but I forgot to take photos again.  I caught my friend Peter as he was finishing his dinner and enlisted him to take a photo of us.

We wandered down the street to a Mescal Bar for a couple after dinner chasers.

Today I hung the lantern that blew down when I opened the windows last week then sprayed for ants.
I walked down to a store that Deke told me about to Mat my photos but wandered to far and returned home.  Beautiful warm day with breeze coming through the open windows.  Fairly quiet today too. I’m going out to meet Sandra for a light dinner tonight at Importando.

FATHER CARRYING HIS SON WHILE WALKING THE DOGS WITH DAUGHTER

Wednesday was a Concert at San Paulo.

INTENSE

Sandra met me at the Cafe but when we arrived it was already standing room.  We decided to visit the Cacao Exhibit next door then returned just as the Pianist and Singer arrived on stage.  Richard showed up so the three of us held up the wall in case of a Earthquake but we were close and the acoustics were great.  As you can tell for yourself:   OPERA SINGER AT SAN PAULO

We all went to Luna y Sol to get a bite to eat.  I had Spinach Lasagna which may not look good but was superb.

Thurs was Dominoes at the library.  I was hoping to advance my standing with the new knowledge of stratagem that I learned last week, but that was not to be the case…perhaps I was too over overconfident like our President.  I broke all records for last place with over 500 points.

LANDLORD’S SHIPPING CHILE PEPPERS

I licked my wounds the next day and dropped off the photos to be matted.  It was busy and I really didn’t know what I was doing.  He spoke Spanish, I spoke English and I think I screwed up.  I should have studied up on Matting and complimentary colors, the colors of my walls, my condo, what room the photo was going in , where it would hang…I blew it…but stuck to my commitment as the cost…around $150 wasn’t a lot for over 9 photos.
I did drop my laundry off too. Sandra stopped by and we went to the Catedral for dinner.

SALMON STEAMED IN SPINACH WITH MUSSELS

SHRIMP TACOS

CORN POUND CAKE WITH ICE CREAM

Saturday was light shopping to restock.  Some fresh eggs, tomatoes, real yogurt, Oranges, and back home.

Sunday, Sandra was moving into her new Hotel so we met to tour Monte Alban.

We took a taxi, spent a couple hours seeing the sites.  She climbed a lot and explored while I sat in the shade, took photos, and bought junk souvenirs for a lot of money while pretending I understood everything they said, when it fact I didn’t. We returned back home then met that evening.

Monday was shopping for Sandra before leaving. We met at the Hotel Restaurant and after breakfast we started with the Mescalaria, but no sale, then on to the tourists places.

We were still going until about 2:30 when we visited Cabouche .  I ate the special while she had the salad before we called it a day.

Sandra was going to visit Kurt and Lynn at their hotel and have a toast on the roof before leaving the next day.
I was coming down with a cold so stayed home and to bed early.

Valentine’s Day and I agreed to deliver some balloons to two people at the library for Margie my Amiga back in Phoenix.  I felt better so stopped a lady walking in the street with balloons and purchased two Heart balloons for Nancy and Mari at the library.  After I made delivery I stopped to rest my legs and read when Lynn and Kurt stopped ,while walking by , to say hello.
I went to the hardware store on the return home and bought some wall anchors and a drill bit to  hang my photos when I pick them up on Wednesday.

Well I have to remember…this is Mexico.  First thing this morning I ran out to get the matted photos to hang…but they weren’t ready.  So I played on my computer most of the day after arranging for Helen and I to meet and eat at the Berlina tonight.

We had a nice meal and visit with both Gabriel and his wife Johanna from Germany. Great meal.

Today I take down the table at Dominoes.
