MY NEW DESK,FOOD,BOUTIQUE ETC

I went out to pick up the laundry before my Desk delivery and mentioned to Adelina, the maid, that if Hector, the owner was going to put up my bathroom shelve today, the door was unlocked.  She replied that he was busy today and maybe Monday. Forgot to ask which week..Mexico..patience.

Just after I returned Don and Pat showed up with my Desk.  Way more than I expected.  Perfect size and real drawer with shelve all of it plywood and pine finished beautifully.  I was very impressed. Don, who never took carpentry is a self taught woodworker with extraordinary talent. He helped me carry it to my new office then took Pat for lunch at Importando where Darcy, Pat’s brother hangs out.
Now that I knew the landlord wasn’t going to be there I left to join them.  Darcy was there and we shared a couple of pitchers of beer before I left.

I was hungry so stopped again at Taj Mahal for Chicken something that was very good.

Once home I started planning how I was going to rearrange the furniture and where did I want the TV located.

Sunday I drew up plans for the TV Table.  The craftsmanship of Don’s is excellent so I think it’s worth it to wait and let him work his magic.  I did wake in the night with fire in my belly.  As much as I love the Taj Mahal I can’t abuse my body.  It’s just not worth it.  NO MORE SPICY.  I had some of my Chicken Soup and Alka-Selzer and felt better. Spent the day at home.

Monday I was going to one of the villages to buy a nice hand woven reed basket but was trying to buy some Canadian Stock with a new account I set up.  Well it has to be in Canadian Money.  So I switched to Canadian Money assuming the Broker just changes it for the rate and charges a small fee.
Most of the day was spent on the computer.  I thought it was set but had to wait until today for the transaction to be settled.
I went out for a long walk and stopped for Hot Chocolate and some water while reading my new book.  The Glory and the Power is great saga of American History from 1932 to 1972. Protesters were continuing to incite the people.

Returning home I stopped and ordered two more Photos on Canvas but this time I got it right.  They will be ready on Thursday.  Then I bought a Chicken Torta to have for dinner.  It was spicy so I ate the chicken and threw out the Torta. Watched a few episodes of Orphan Black and retired.

CURIO SHOP WITH INCENSE AND ASSORTED EVERYTHING

Today I was set to buy my stock with Canadian money…which apparently has gone way down in value over the last year or two.  Maybe I’ll spend this summer in Canada?  It turned out I didn’t change the money over.  To do that I have to put in a buy order and purchase it with my American Dollars. So I bought 5000+ Canadian Dollars for $4000 American…then bought 500 shares of stock…I think.  I still have to wait a day for that to settle I guess?  E-Trade everything is instant. I will find out tomorrow and make an effort to visit the Village of Basket Weavers.
Deke, the Manager, brought a repair man to install two shelves I requested last week. Very happy.

I went to Biznaga and had a Portabello  Mushroom with Provolone Cheese , Spinach, and Pistachio Nuts with Mixed Carrots, Zucchini, Tomato and Olives.  Very good.

I walked there and back home, watched another episode of Orphan Back and retired.

This morning I discovered I did buy the stock and overnight the symbol changed from CGC to WEED. I like that.  The stock rose today.

I went to a copy shop and had 7 photographs printed on heavy stock paper. I was debating on using my charge card when he told me the bill was 60 Pesos!  Less than $3.  I was amazed. So I stopped my an Oriental Store to buy some  lamp shades for three of my bare light bulbs.  100 Pesos…less than $5.  Wow.  I returned home feeling rich.

Had some homemade Chicken Vegetable soup, watched Orphan Black and retired early so I could make my tour at 9 am.

I woke at 7 am but couldn’t get out of the house on time so cancelled the tour.  I cancelled the tour I had booked for Saturday too.  Very busy with little things this week.  I am off to pick up my Canvas Photos and stop at the Market.  I hope to hang my Lamp Shades today but will have to borrow a ladder with these high ceilings. Richard asked me to join him for dinner at a new place North of the Center.  I had the Surf and Turf…Two Shrimp and a Small Steak covered with Cheese?

I did get the lamp shades up, picked up my Photos on Canvas and hung them too.

That evening I attended an opening photo exhibit by our property Manager Dick (Deke) Keis. It was Black and White photos of Mexican tradesmen and artists.

SHOWING HER TECHNIQUE TO HER FRIEND

Dominoes Day!  I lost again then went to the Organic Market and bought some Turkey Sausage made by this German Lady.  It was lunch time and I stopped into a restaurant that Richard recommended.  Nice full meal special for $3.75.  Horachata to drink, nice salad followed by Chicken Cordon Bleu with fresh Steamed Vegetables and Penna Pasta with fresh Tomato Sauce.  An apple chopped into small piece , mixed with chopped nuts and topped with a sweet yogurt was dessert.

A Gallery was open that I had wanted to stop in…so did.

Saturday and I cancelled my tour to Mitla at the last minute.  I just want to relax and do nothing for a day.  I made some Lentil Soup and ran out to print some more pictures that Heather, my daughter sent me. I saw Helen on the way so she joined me while I completed my errands then we split a pizza and bid goodbye.

Today I went early to the library for their big Boutique Sale.

I was looking for a large pot to make my soups and a small Crock Pot.  I didn’t find either but….

NAH…NOT YET ANYWAY.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Time to go meet Don and go over my drawings for my new TV Table…then SUPER BOWL!

ON GOING…TAJ MAHAL, CHURCH TOUR, ISRAELI CHEF DINNER…

Monday night was the informative lecture and slide show on Mexico City.  Helen was there so we sat together and had dinner after at the Vino y Luna.

Tuesday I went to Walmart and replaced my pillow that needed it.

That evening I contacted Helen to meet at Taj Mahal up the street for some Indian Food.

Forgot to take the Photo BEFORE..it was good

Wednesday Morning I met Peter at the Santa Domingo Basilica for the start of his Church walking tour.  This church was founded by the Dominicans.

There was a work crew removing an Art Exhibit from the front of the Church Grounds.  It was Carving of Huge Stones.

We passed the School of Law where the University students that didn’t like something the Administration did…torched the place.

NOW CLASSES ARE TAUGHT IN FRONT ON THE STREET

The next church we went to was founded by the Augustine’s

The third was founded by the Franciscans and the adjacent Convent is now being used as an Art School.

Our last church was founded by the Jesuits.  They were educators while the other orders were here to enlighten and convert the heathens.

I went shopping for a stove knob replacement afterwards and lucked out.  On the way home I stopped at an Artisan Craft Store.

When I returned home my stove knob fit upside down so still have to return it.

I went back to the Taj Mahal by myself to try another dish..Roos Chicken with a Lassi (yogurt drink) then walked over to the Zocalo to see the Danzon.

Today I’m having dinner prepared by an Israeli Chef that works in NYC and Oaxaca.  I ate her food last year when she was a guest Chef at Luna y Sol restaurant. This morning I returned to exchange my stove knob but they didn’t have the right one so kept what I had…my exercise for the day.
I stopped on the way to the dinner party and picked up a couple of beers to have with my meal. When I arrived three ladies were already present.  One was a Chef friend, Annalisa that I knew from last year when she also did dinner parties, the other was on the Church tour with me and was with a friend Barbara that I recognized from other tours we shared.  Both were retired Sociologists from upstate NY area.

The charming hostess prepared me a Vodka and fresh Grapefruit and I joined the group.  Appetizers were served with the cocktail and the other guests arrived.  Glen, from the states that fell in love while visiting Oaxaca and now makes his home here where he opened an attractive restaurant.           Uriel arrived with his sister, both Oaxacans from Mixe village but now own a jewelry store that provides people with the tools and items to make their own jewelry. Two other Mexican ladies joined us.  One has 70 dogs she raises, the other an Artist that studied in Toronto for 5 years.
Hagar, our host, brought a bowl with pieces of paper inscribed with a character that matched a corresponding character on the table.  You drew one, found your corresponding one at the table and that is where you sat.  The character could have been Calligraphy, Arabic, or Mayan? Great idea.

The Chef, Hagar Aviram, an Israeli is an outstanding Chef that was preparing an all Vegetarian meal and explaining each course as she went along. She has a great web site Vagabond Cookery.
I returned home full and exhilarated after such a wonderful evening with wonderful companions.

Friday I joined Richard, and Mel for our Dominoes game at the library.  I WON!  Finally.  I stopped at the market on the way home and picked up some lentils and bananas.  That afternoon I took a taxi to Tomas Inn on the other side of town.  It was recommended for the Shrimp Cocktail and Happy Hour on the roof.  I got there late and it was packed with Mexicans enjoying the Cantina atmosphere with two bands.  One downstairs and the other on the roof where I wanted to sit but there was no seats left.  The manager explained the music starts at 4 and if you want the Mariachi Band it is 100 pesos for 3 songs…the band downstairs just plays on a stage and you tip them.

I retired early and hope the landlord puts up a shelve for me tomorrow and my desk is being delivered.

LECTURE, WRONG CULTURAL CENTER, TV, WOMEN’S PROTEST , LUNCH WITH THE LADIES…

Thursday, today, I attended the second half of the Two Part Lecture on the history of Oaxaca giving by Mary Randell, a loooonnnggg time resident of Oaxaca every winter anyway.  She is also an educator and knows the history of Mexico as well as Oaxaca.
Helen called me and asked if I was going to the Spanish guitar concert at the Cultural Center…I replied I might.  I thought she meant the one in our neighborhood so later decided to take a walk over and was surprised to see what a large place it was.  I had visited before when I lived where Helen is now staying but don’t remember it being so nice.  I saw a man with a guitar and asked if he was playing tonight and he said yes in another 1/2 hour upstairs.  I was early so took in a photo exhibit and wandered around.
THE CULTURAL CENTER IS A CONVERTED CONVENT ADJACENT TO THIS CHURCH

I discovered the guitarist was there for lessons along with a group as well as piano players, violinists, ballet dancers…etc…NO Concert…It was then I realized I got my cultural centers mixed up. So I headed for the other one in the center.  The security told me the concert was tomorrow night!  I went to a Tejate preparation exhibit. It is a very nourishing drink make from Coco Beans and more.

I had dinner that night at Vino y Tapas
Taking the bus home, two comedians doing a routine picked me out with my Mexico baseball Cap on and commented “Bandajo” or something like that while a bus full of people broke out in laughter as I scurried to my seat in the back.
Friday I was looking forward to our afternoon Dominoes Game but….
Well the Dominoes players never showed…Richard and I were there.

We left and went to the Market.  Richard found some papers to roll a j and I shopped for furniture.  I saw an ironing board with a cabinet built under it that was too long but looked perfect if you cut off the ironing board end.

I went to the Xerox store to see if they could put my photos of a mural on canvas and in a frame for me to hang in my new condo.  We misunderstood each other for an hour before I finally paid her $15 for two different ones.  She said they would be ready for pickup at 6 pm.  I returned home, played with my new TV then took a power nap and woke at almost 6 pm.  I took the laundry to the drop off point and grabbed a bus to the Xerox store but she was busy and explained closing was 8 pm.  I ran over to the Market with my measurements for the cabinet and caught the family loading everything back into there truck to return home.  I went to the truck, measured the “ironing board/cabinet” and explained that I would buy it if the end was cut off.  Just make another without the ironing board top and I’ll return next week and buy it.  No…we do it now and we will deliver it to your casa. I was skeptical but Mexicans are sincere and truthful people so I paid and gave them my address and as I was leaving to take the bus home the husband was sawing away.
I arrived and waited outside the door for about 10 minutes when the truck and the family showed up, unloaded my perfect cabinet.  There son threw it over his shoulder and on my request delivered it to my living room.  I tipped him and ran back to get a photo of this wonderful family that gave me service I could never hope for in Arizona.
IT WAS AN IRONING BOARD WITH CABINET FOR STORAGE
I then returned to the Xerox place to pick up my canvas murals…turned out to be 2’x3′ each!  For $15 I rolled them up then headed for Luna y del Sol for pizza and wine.
YEP …ANOTHER PIZZA..GOT TO STOP THIS HABIT

I called Richard and he was headed for Biznaga so after my dinner, I joined him and made reservations for 6 for 4 pm on Saturday.

Today I met Sandra, the SERVAS member who just arrived, and her friend Lynn at Brujula Coffee Shop near where the Women’s Protest March was taking place.  We had coffee then went over to the demonstration.  There were 1000 people I guessed though others said 2000.  It was a peaceful and nice demonstration…the first I’ve ever attended. I witnessed a few but I wanted to photograph this along with the other 1000 people.

CANADIAN..WHO’S THE BAD MAN AND WHAT HAS HE DONE? TRUMP FASCISTA?
CHRIS, OUR RESIDENT DOCUMENTARIAN
START POINT

Here are two more “takes” on the March in Oaxaca:
  One person’s view.
 Another person’s view.

Sandra and Lynn were very likable people and I really enjoyed our short time together over all the noise.  They agreed to join my little get together at Biznaga at 4 pm so I ran over and upped the reservations to 8…then followed the march to the Zocalo to take more photos.  I went over to the Opera and debated seeing Romeo and Juliet that was being Simulcast from Carnegie Hall  in NYC.  I was tired and knew I would fall asleep half way through so returned home.
On the way I saw a lady that  I’ve know for 3 years that sells scarves and wrap around warmers made in the villages.

She is in her 70’s, 4 foot 6″ and works the Zocalo everyday.  She tires and sits with her sunglasses as the sun bothers her eyes…then up and out again.  Always a smile and pleasant but not she is doing it with a walker for assistance and her ankle is bandaged.  I went over and said hello. She recognized me and asked how I have been as I placed some money in her hand and told her to buy a cup of coffee.  She thanked me and I went on my way.

I was dehydrated and bought some water in a complex underneath the Gazebo in the center of the Zocalo.  Many people don’t realized there are shops underground and bathrooms where mostly Mexicans go to eat or use the restrooms.
I was on my way home when I had to stop with leg cramps and sit for a bit.  I looked across the street and there was a man laying flat on the sidewalk wearing black sweater and slacks with heavy black shoes trying to stand.  His legs were so thin and he was so weak…just as he almost was in a standing position his legs gave out and he collapsed and I noted his head fell back on the stone

sidewalk with a thump.  It was Noon and the sun was beating down on him. He started to move again so I walked over and offered him what I had left of my water.  He was sick.  I walked home looking for a policeman to report this man was going to die if he didn’t get help but I saw no one and didn’t know what I could do so assumed someone would stop and help.

I picked up my laundry and arrived home and rested until it was time to meet everyone at Biznaga where we were having a late lunch.  When I arrived , Halina and Helen with Halina’s friend Barbara and another lady from Poland named Anastasia were waiting to inform me they invited two more friends.  So now the reservation went to 10 the we moved in another table just as Carol and Margo showed up to join us. I had seen them there before but had never met this wonderful couple from Oregon area I think.  Then Sandra and Lynn showed up while we all had a fantastic late lunch. The food was outstanding.

SOMETHING I WAS TOLD WAS EXCELLENT

AGAIN, I WAS TOLD THIS WAS EXCELLENT

I left to deliver some “Muffins” to my friend Hector who was to meet me at Importando in the Zocalo. A band was playing on the way and another was just leaving.

We had a glass of wine together and as I was paying the bill and leaving Darcy showed up with Pat and another friend I respect a lot, Jan.  We joked a bit since it was Darcy that made the muffins and I headed home after saying goodbye to Hector after we visited a Mexican protest taking place.

I was passing by the place the man had fallen that afternoon so bought a bottle of water just in case he was still around the area.  He wasn’t but there was a younger version of him begging for money. I gave him the bottle and his eyes lit up as he thanked me profusely.
I’m home and hope to host Sandra tomorrow after she moves in with a Mexican family with an 80 year old grandma,  as part of her immersion in Spanish affiliated with the school she is attending.
Sandra and Lynn showed up.  I showed them my condo and some videos of Oaxaca then we all headed over to the Zocalo.  We did a little shopping then settled down at the outdoor Cafe for a glass of wine.  We were all hungry so decided to have dinner at Tres Bistro.

PROTEST RALLY AGAINST GAS PRICES…HERE PEOPLE DANCED

AGAIN I FORGOT TO TAKE THE PHOTO BEFORE!

THE END OF THE PROTEST..THIS SINGER HAD EVERYONE MEMORIZED..INCLUDING ME

It was a nice meal as usual.

We departed and they went back to their new place and I returned home.
Today I walked over to the hardware store hoping to find a replacement knob to my stove but no luck.  I was already half way to the Super Market so thought I would go there and browse.  Well I came home with a microwave and some cucumbers to make some sweet pickles.  I got the Microwave up and running, made my pickles, had a bowl of my homemade chicken soup and headed for a lecture about Mexico city by my friend Bill Pumpfreys.
  s

ONE OF MY FAVORITE ORGANIC RESTAURANTS…TUNA SALAD…I DON’T REMEMBER WHEN.

I HAVE A HARD TIME KEEPING TRACK OF THESE BUSY DAYS…AS YOU HAVE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.  END OF POST.

Four Days Passed Quickly…Now the Move, Lectures,Dominoes and more good food.

I met my friend Richard last night.  We ended up having a Pizza at an Italian Restaurant.  I ate something the day before that did set right so Pizza sounded good. We caught up on our summer adventures, parted ways and returned home.

I was to attend at trip to visit Mitla, another Zapotec temple, but woke in the night with continuing problems and couldn’t return to sleep thinking about calling Century Link today to get my tenants  in Scottsdale on the internet.  I over slept, missed the lecture and decided to call PC Repair to go over and help my tenants but they didn’t answer the phone or return my call.

I decided to call Data Doctors and they had a Technician return my call within 15 minutes.  He needed a Credit Authorization form filled out before he could do the work but agreed to call and make an appointment. He then emailed me the form. I tried to have it printed next door but they were closed.

She turned away when she saw the camera..sings too.  Her mother plays too just down the street.

I did make the evening lecture at 5 pm.  It was another full house.

When I returned from the fantastic, unbelievable lecture by the only Indigenous Person (he was Zapotec from Oaxaca) to receive his PHD in the country of the Netherlands.  One of 11 children, his Father and Mother, age 17 and 14, came down from the Sierra Norte Mountains in Oaxaca to the city with their first child to start a new life.
Louis, the lecturer,  was younger than me, married a lady from Ohio he met while going to the University here.  She died about 5 years ago and his (17 year old..just a guess) daughter was there for the lecture. How Louis, who only spoke Zapotec in grade school, went on to become a PHD, author a book, teach all over the USA as a professor…then return to his roots to try and change Mexico starting with Oaxaca was amazing. I digress.
The computer store was closed that evening when I returned so couldn’t get a copy of the authorization form printed to fax back to Data Doctor.  It was bed time.
I woke in the night with Montezuma’s revenge…not good.

It was Friday and the tenants upstairs were moving out.  I assumed I would move in on Saturday but had some things packed in preparation for the move.  I went to the Internet store to print my authorization but it was closed.  I cancelled Dominoes because I was still having problems with diarrhea but went to get something to eat because they are moving me tomorrow and I have no food.  After about 5 visits to the toilet I thought I could make it to get some solid food in my stomach.

I did and thank god their bathroom was free.  I tried to eat an Omelette and drank some juice but left half of it to return to the Internet store and had an “accident ” on the way.  I returned home, took another shower, changed my clothes then visited the internet store and made a copy of my credit authorization for Data Doctor to complete the appointment they made with Rae, my tenant.  I then filled it out and faxed it to Scottsdale ,  returned and called their office to insure they received it.

Then I called the Technician that made the appointment to be sure he understood there was nothing wrong with the network that I was aware of other then Rae could not get on her Hewlett Packard Laptop and that I was on the network the day before I left and that my neighbor is also on the network so there is nothing wrong with the router.

I was nauseated and back and forth between bed and the bathroom when the maid came and said the movers were here to move my refrigerator?  The landlord had a crew come to move the other tenant out and had to switch refrigerators.  The manager explained they were available to move all my stuff today!  I had packed three suitcases and had some stuff ready but all the bathroom, my closets, the kitchen dishes , food, all my computers, …well everything was yet to be packed.
Five guys showed up and I wasn’t going to wait until tomorrow to move everything myself so had them switch the refrigerator and take the suitcases I packed. Then I went  upstairs and emptied out the suitcases while the maid and the guys just kept grabbing my clothes from the closets, 5 gallon water bottles, clothes rack, silverware, while I returned with the empty suitcase and started throwing books and bathroom stuff, toilet paper, shampoo, dishes, food items …this went back and forth for five hours.  I was dizzy , sweating, physically exerting myself like I used to when I was 45, up and down stairs, etc.  I finally couldn’t breath and was too dehydrated from the diarrhea, no food , etc.

I didn’t have any change to pay everyone for sticking around and finishing my end of the move so I just arranged to give all the money to the big guy that works here for the landlord’s business and he agreed that he would split it up.  The manager gave me some meds for my problem. I went up to my new apartment and start sorting out the mess.  My blood pressure was 87/56 so I just rested and drank a lot of water.

PRAYED TO GET WELL

It is now about 8 pm and the Meds seem to be restoring me to normal.  I have to say it felt good to work that hard even if I almost died doing it.   I did feel myself fading and was incoherent on and off for about 1 1/2 hours toward the end. I will sleep in my new bed tonight and finish unpacking the rest tomorrow.  The maid is coming to clean up the floors tomorrow.

I was up and down once all night and up early.  This place gets lot of sun during the day. Late this afternoon I laid in bed to rejuvenate myself while looking out the window at a tree instead of a wall.  The tree was dancing in the wind it’s branches like arms swaying to the rhythm of the wind while birds danced back and forth from branch to branch like they were accompanying the dancing tree. Then the maid came and mopped the floor.

TILL NEXT YEAR

I HOPE THEY BRING THE ICE RINK BACK

NOW THAT’S A DOG

MUSIC EVERY WHERE
Then the dog started barking.   I could see it on the rooftop on the other side of the wall.  I shut the window and took out my hearing aides and calm was restored.  Everything was calm and still.  I think I’m really going to like this place.

LIVE BAND AND POPULAR DANCE EVERY WEDNESDAY

I slept well last night and was awakened at 6:10 am  by an earthquake somewhere near Acapulco.  The building swayed softly like a boat in mooring. This was my third since coming to Mexico 4 years ago. Sunday being a day of rest I stayed home again except for a long walk to the Supermarket to stock up now that I was settled in one place.  I took a taxi back to save any embarrassing moments.

Today I stayed in again except for a brief walk to the Organic Market but they had nothing I wanted in the line of groceries. Nice restaurants there so ate some Grilled Fish Italian style that was very good then went to the local convenience store for butter, bread and bananas then settled back in for another night.

It’s Tuesday and I emailed Richard for lunch but he’s off to the Gym. Now I feel guilty and know what’s right so I decide to walk to lunch and back..maybe 2 miles.  Stopped to print info copies of important Docs at the Internet store, dropped off the laundry and got directions to the key maker.               Walked past Zocalo, turned right and I was at a string of shoe stores.  Asked for the key maker…go back , right then up??? UP?…well you get the point…a language problem but I’m feeling better walking 6 miles instead of 2.

I FORGOT THE HOOFS SALES LADY..JUST HOOVES?

Circles and Circles…so finally after about 45 minutes..there he is.

THEE KEY SHOP
Thirty cents later I’m on my way with a back up key in my wallet in case I leave without my keys.

ATM was next stop just backtrack through the Zocalo. Got my allowance from the ATM to last the rest of the month and headed for the Farmacia to up my diarrhea Meds.   Then on to lunch at Biznaga’s…great Mediterranean Skewers of Beef, Pepper and Onions Marinated in Wine I suspect but Filet Mignon.. for cheap .

SORRY..COULDN’T WAIT.

Kathleen showed and I renewed our acquaintance.  She lives in Boston near the Cordon Bleu School and keeps a home not far from the restaurant we are in.
A saleslady came through table to table trying to sell some limes she picked off her tree.  I was getting ready to go to the market to buy limes so I bought one bag then she being a good sales person said I could have the second for half price.  So now I’m stocked with limes.
Then as I was leaving I heard a soft voice whisper..to my ears…David..and there was beautiful , smiling, welcoming Martha. She introduced me to her classy friend but my ears didn’t pick up her name.  We chatted a bit about her return to the States and I left making a note to email her ASAP.  We converse well and have things in common. It is a pleasure to share her company.
I was returning home and noticed the convenience store I purchased my bananas at so ran in and bought some Tangerines.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY

My laundress told me to return at 5 to pick up my laundry.  It was 4 so I returned to the condo . Feeling good about the walking and my energy so while I was partaking of lunch earlier, the Technician that repaired or replaced my Century Link Modem and install a router and configured it all while connecting my tenants computer reported I owed him almost $300.  I was happy because he gave good service and what I asked for.

ARE THEY BACK?

Getting ready to go pick up the laundry before Hector my friend arrived for our reunion get together and dinner when I heard a knock on the door and there was NOT Hector but somebody delivering a basket of organic fresh food products…vegetables, eggs, herbs, fruits…???  I thought someone was giving me a Welcome Basket. He was looking for the former tenants. I think it was a standard order they received each week and forgot to tell him they moved.  Adelina did and gave him the address.  Well about 1 minute after I closed the door I thought …this is great.  To get fresh organic fruits, veggies, and eggs , I have to get a taxi or walk a LOT and only on a few designated days a week…I want that delivery and chased him out in the street just as he was getting in his car. Got the info then left for the laundry.  When I returned Hector showed just after.  We sat and talked about our year until 7 rolled around then walked over to Tres Bistro for dinner…and a fun evening.

My Oysters were fresh and succulent. He had Pumpkin Blossoms and Corn in Spinach Crepes. We both had Grilled Salmon on Mushroom Risotto and share a liter of Red Wine.  The staff was great…I found out the Bartender, Alfredo makes all the chocolate truffles they serve. They are the best in Oaxaca. We toasted Chris in her absence and just had a good time. I took a cab home and slept well.

WHOOPS DID IT AGAIN
THE GARNISH LOOKS LIKE BLUE CORN CHIPS

THEY ARE THE CRISPY SKIN OF THE SALMON CUT IN SHAPES TO FORM A FAN..AND GOOD

Today I’m off to the Library for a lecture. The lady Anna Casilly was from Ashland Oregon and very good.  It was about how to be a better communicator.  Something we could all learn, especially me. I hope I got something out of it. I had lunch at a new place just up the street.

GRASS FED…REAL HOT CHOCOLATE

This morning I wanted to get some quality bread at the best bakery in Oaxaca. I walked a lot, had breakfast at a little hole in the wall that serves quality food, beverage and delivers fast pleasant service, then walked to the best bakery in Oaxaca, bought a Half a Loaf of Cracked Whole Wheat bread.

THEY KNOW BREAD…SCHOOLING IN FRANCE?

I then visited a very unique grocery store that offers homemade organic pickled and fermented products in addition to Tahini, Real Peanut Butter, Homemade Dill Pickles, Pickle relish,Apple or Pear sauce and assorted vegetables. In season they sell Wild Mushrooms. Then I met a friend who I had ordered some Chocolate Muffins and Cakes from. We chatted, had a lemonade and returned home with the goodies.

The condo is looking a little better now…still need somethings on the wall.

ENTRANCE ..I’M UP STAIRS ON THE LEFT

Dominoes dominated the Day.   I arrived at 10 am for my first Mexican Train Dominoes game since I left last year.  There were 6 of us and I ended up to be the BIG loser.  I mean …nobody was close to my losing point score.  I think it was my new glasses…just couldn’t read the dice..blurry…confused me. Wasn’t my fault…NEXT WEEK
I shopped the Friday Market in Llano Park and bought a small funnel and some Ginger before crossing over to Quinque Restaurant for their Comida ..or daily special of Friday Fish…It was breading and Pan Fried…the whole meal was great for $4.

While I was returning home I passed through the Zocalo and stopped to say hi to Darcy.  He introduced me to a Celtic Canadian from New Brunswick named Steve.  I took off for home hoping to get some things done and was to meet Helen at 5:30 for dinner.  Didn’t have much time to do anything and it was 5:30 when Helen showed at my door having taken the bus from Llano Park.  It was good to see her and I was anxious to show my place.  I try to sound not too over enthusiastic because I don’t want to come across as a braggart and show off…but I love my place.
We walked to the Cathedral Restaurant for dinner.  Richard and his friend Alice was there when we arrived.  We shared introductions but refused their invitation to join them so we could catch up on things since last I saw her in Rochester in May of last year.

Our dinner was very good as usual…especially Helen’s dessert which I never did get to taste but then she didn’t get to taste my Chocolate Coffee Mousse. We took a taxi home.

I wanted to relax with an On-Line Poker game with my Music Cloud but last night I couldn’t get on mymusiccloud  except my old free account that I cancelled last year when I upgraded and uploaded ever song I’ve ever cherished all my life then deleted the copies, CDs, tapes, vinal, when now I can’t get access. I emailed their help address.

I bought a TV at Sam’s Club along with all my groceries.  That same day I noticed a sale at Walmart for an upgraded model of the same UHD Samsung Smart TV for 25% less.

Sunday I returned the TV to Sam’s Club then went to Walmart and bought another TV saving $125 so I bought a blender.  I spent the whole day and evening trying to hook the TV up to no avail .

Monday I attended a lecture on the history of Oaxaca Part 1 then returned to give the TV one more go.  No go.

Tuesday I returned the TV for another with no problem.

Today Adelina is coming to clean house and I’m meeting Pat, Darcy’s sister to give her money so her boyfriend of 20 years can make a desk for the extra bedroom.  When I return, I will try to set up the TV.

OAXACA AGAIN

The flight from Phoenix went well except for the $25 fee to check my bag.  American Airlines had allowed one free checked bag if you were going to Mexico.  No Mas.  So I checked one and carried the other along with a Messenger Bag aboard the flight.  No fun lugging all this stuff while waiting but when I boarded, the Steward that checked my boarding pass noted my height and issued me another boarding pass along with the one I had.  He did this while talking to another in Spanish who was also boarding.  I saw it but wasn’t sure what it meant since no explanation was given.
I sat in my assigned seat according to the first boarding pass…then looked at the new seat he gave me and realized this was not a full plane so he gave me the Exit Row with full leg room.  I jumped up and moved, listened to the Flight Attendant explain what I had to do if the plane crashed then we rose into the sky with one very happy passenger.
I arrived in Mexico City but had to change over to Interjet Air that was a partner of American.  A new boarding pass was required as was me lugging my baggage two miles to check in at Interjet. The computer didn’t recognize my ticket so I had to go to the counter where a very nice attentive Ticket Reservationist  issued me a Boarding Pass but said I had to watch the departures to discover the departure Gate when posted.

Great I walked another 2 miles to gate 27 with two rest stops in between to relieve my cramped legs.  I was hour and a half early so sat in front of the desk and started reading when after about an hour I realized the flight number on the screen changed.  I approached the desk and showed them my ticket and asked why the change when he pointed out there was no flight to Oaxaca from this gate.  The flight number now referred to Bogota, Columbia.  My flight disappeared on all screens.  There were others that fell prey to the same deception so we formed a co-op and pooled our resources. Richard spoke good Spanish and checked his American Airlines web site hoping to get info, the lady was from Mexico so she went to Interjet Desk to inquire and I sought out the Information Desk.  We were all told gate 21 so we left with me trailing way behind.  No one was at 21 and was told 22 so went back to be told 23…where I was told 24…and there we all were told the plane was delayed out of Chicago and would be an hour and a half late.  It was.
Then we were told to board. Richard had came from Santa Fe New Mexico and left with me on his connecting flight in Phoenix.  Both of us had bags bound for Oaxaca and were worried about transferring them to this delayed flight.  When I arrived in Oaxaca I was anxious to get to my Condo so ran right out to book an Authorized Taxi  before the line started but when I returned to the baggage area I wasn’t allowed in even after I presented them with my ticket AND my baggage claim.  I had to wait until LAST.  When I saw Richard coming with his bags I asked him to talk to Security to let me in…he said I left the baggage area which I was not supposed to do and had to wait like a criminal. The baggage attendant brought me the last bag to be claimed…mine.
I just make the last Taxi and as usual I was the first to be let off since I was closest to the airport.  Deke, my manager was waiting along with Hector and Lucia, the owners.  Hector brought a Propane Gas Tank in and lit my water heater and stove to make sure it was OK. The maid, Adelina had fresh flowers arranged for me along with a bunch of bananas.  I spent three hours unpacking and taking my “stuff” out of storage before I retired.

Saturday was New Year’s Eve and was very busy everywhere.

The bus dropped me at my ATM and I got enough to pay my rent then stopped for a haircut before walking to the Zocalo where I ran into my beer drinking friend Darcy who introduced me to Ron from West Virginia.

Ron was 74  and has been traveling to a different country every year since he retired, looking for a place to live or at least spend every winter.  He had been to
Columbia last year, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica before that. He finally arrived in Oaxaca after numerous recommendations and was on his way to Puerto Escondido next week to check out the beach scene. Very nice man that fishes and hunts a lot from his cabin in West Virginia in the spring and fall.
Darcy and I caught up with the news since we last saw each other.  His waitress got Zika virus along with a number of people in Oaxaca.  He got new dentures on his last visit to his Mom’s in Canada for FREE. Some benefits of Canadian Health Insurance are good.
Took some photos of the Zocalo Nativity Scenes.

Donkey is Real but not sure he knows the Statues are Not?

I stopped at Cambouche for a Burrito then another place for take out Roasted Chicken to have some food at the condo.   I returned home as it was getting dark and could hear the start of the rockets shooting off.  Last year I saw them from the roof but it was disappointing and without someone to share it…I watched 2 Black Mirror episodes and Goliath.    A few Mescal and Campari with a little smoke put me to bed around 11 pm.  Fireworks lulled me to sleep.

I settled the rent with Deke, the condo Manager.  He told me my maid and her daughter got the Zika virus.  He had the beginning of the flu that I just got over.  He said my upstairs apartment would be ready to move into Friday.  I had thought I may have to wait until April so was very happy.  I talked to the present tenants and found out they furnished the place and were taking most of their stuff to the new location.  Deke said the landlord would move my furniture there or buy new if I didn’t mind waiting.  They were leaving the beds and a dining room table so I told him I would wait for the new furniture.
Darcy had told me a bike shop was selling the very same electric bike I just bought from Denmark . I went to the shop but they were closed so will try again tomorrow. New Years Day and most everything was closed and the street were empty, but not the Zocalo.

New Year’s Eve Buses …must have had lots of nice parties?

I walked back to the Zocalo and noticed the Ice Skating Rink that was empty yesterday (except for the bleachers) was starting to fill up with timid skaters.

Music Rink but no brave souls
Everyone waiting to see someone on the ice.
Today they tried…most are sticking to the sidelines…like I used to.

I found Darcy just finishing his New Year’s Day Filet Mignon with Beer of course.  I bought him a beer then crossed over to Tres Bistro for my New Year’s Grilled Salmon and Wine dinner.

So hungry I ate most before remembering to take a picture.

I saw Saul and a few people I knew then stopped to buy a foot stool, Kleenex, wine, tonic and lemonade.  I had visited the Organic Market, after looking for the bike store, and bought some homemade, no sugar, yogurt so eat with my granola tomorrow.  Exhausted, I took a taxi home to watch some more Black Mirror and Goliath on Netflix and Amazon before bed.

It was Monday and the library reopened to I visited to pay my annual membership and sign up for some lectures and tours.

Bill, a friend, was volunteer Host at the door welcoming a couple from France.  He oriented them around then invited me to his 75th birthday blow out Big party with a band, food and drink!  Had to wait until April but my name was now on the list of invitations. He told me the bike shop I was looking for was in Colonial Reforma…the Northern section of Oaxaca. I saw some friends then walked to Biznaga for late Lunch.

I stopped at the Main Market on my way home and bought some Beets, Ginger, Tangerines and Limes. I noticed a Tech Phone store and stopped to see if they had a cable to charge my phone with.  I left it home but ordered one on Amazon to be delivered in a couple days but bought the one they had so I could charge my phone now.  I’ll have two cables but two is better than none.
I started a new series called Hell on Wheels that Anita recommended to me. We go to movies a lot and watch Netflix.  The first episode was great.

Today I stayed in a while then left for lunch at Cambouche

Cactus Onion and Tomato Soup
Chicken Breast Stuffed with Spinach

I stopped at my favorite Cafe for Coffee

Husband and Wife Baristas …don’t see this at Starbucks..great coffee.

and on to the library for a lecture about Street Art of Oaxaca.  I love to see new murals go up and have made some canvas photos to hang of them in my Scottsdale condo. Unfortunately my Camera battery went dead but I did get two pictures.  One of the many beautiful Murals

…and because of a new law that no Graffiti Art can go on Historical Buildings..it was painted over but someone did leave a sad comment.

Notice the Tears

Today I stayed at home trying to communicate with my tenants, neighbor, and Century Link to fix my internet connection.  Work still in Progress.  Now I’m off to meet Richard, my Oaxacan friend that just arrived from Ashville S.C.  We will catch up on our summer adventures and have dinner at Tres Bistro.

SPAIN AND HOME

I arrived at Victoria Hostel around 9 pm that evening after catching my 4:50 flight out of Amsterdam and taking the train into Madrid on arrival.  My room and bill was ready.  I already paid for one night prior to leaving Spain in order to reserve the room for two nights.  Now they wanted me to pay for both nights.  I was not happy and didn’t keep the receipt from the September 20th payment before I left.  We agreed to discuss it in the morning when the day cashier was there.

I went out to a nice Japanese Restaurant around the corner from me for a healthy dinner.  I thought the prices were good so had some organic wine with a special house salad.  I already ordered some Ramen Noodles thinking the salad wouldn’t fill me up. Oh, I forgot the Japanese Tapas served with wine.

I took photos along the way and the bartender noticed.  I think he thought I was a food reviewer so came over when he noticed I finished the salad and wine.  He introduced himself and took my plate away while returning with the Organic wine bottle to pour me my second requested glass of wine, while explaining the origin of the wine.  I felt very special and then another waiter delivered the Ramen Noodles.

I took pictures of that too then after I finished my waiter offered dessert but instead I ordered Kabuki Sake Tonic or something like that.  I wanted to try a Japanese Cocktail.  The bartender returned to ask how I liked that and explained the ingredients.

Then the owner came over and introduced himself, explaining they just opened last month and he wanted to know if everything was OK and where I was from.  I told him and he replied he was used to be a car dealer for Nissan and worked with ABC Nissan in Scottsdale for quite a while when he lived in Orange County California. We chatted a while about him getting into the Restaurant business and my experiences.  I assured him I was not a reviewer but would return my last night.

The next morning I had a quick snack for breakfast, packed some more then headed for the Thyseen Museum for the afternoon.

It turned out to be free that day so I enjoyed it even more and treated myself to a light Smoked Salmon sandwich and Cappuccino while I was there.

Terrace Restaurant

It was only 5 pm when I returned to the room to freshen up so decided to have Happy Hour close by.   The Japanese Restaurant didn’t open until 6:30 so I did a short tour of the URBAN Boutique Hotel next door then enjoyed Tapas and Wine and returned to finish packing before my last healthy meal.

Take a close look at this SCUBA Diver

The owner of Victoria Hostel was waiting to explain they never charged my card in advance for the one night before I left for Amsterdam.  They ran the card and that is the bill I signed the day I returned…not another bill…so I did still owe one night.  Misinterpretation of Spanglish.  I apologized and paid my last night.  When I returned to the Japanese Restaurant is was closed…maybe the chef didn’t show? I got a great Burger and Shake at Steak and Shake, retired and checked out at 6 am.

I took the subway to the airport and by the time I checked my bag and arrived at my gate is was only 8:30. I ran into two fellow Oaxacan’s.  Han’s from Holland and Pierre from France.  They own a lovely house in Oaxaca that they open for fund raising events from the library like catered Christmas Dinner’s or House tours.  Pierre was having his published book transcribed into Spanish and came to make sure it was right before submission.  They had arrived in London a few weeks ago and had been in Spain for a while but were now returning to London.  We talked a bit…it was a pleasant.surprise for both of us.
I arrived in NYC around 11 am that same morning but my flight for  Phoenix didn’t depart until around 4 pm.  I claimed my bag, went through customs then rechecked the bag to Phoenix and arrived at my gate around 1:30 pm.  I had the chills and shivers on and off since I left Amsterdam and could tell a bad cold was on it’s way.  I arrived in Phoenix and after taking the shuttle was home at 9:30.  It had been 24 hours since I left my room at Hostel Victoria and I was wound up but managed 6 hours of sleep.

TSA Searched My Bag Again….I’ve gotten over 6 of these…anyone else?…at least they left the hash.

Started the car the next morning and went grocery shopping…home again.  That was almost 2 weeks ago and I’m still sick.  Hardly ever left the house after the first few days except to see the Doctor.  The weather has been beautiful and it is nice to be home again.

MY TIME IN HOLLAND

Sunday, the end of a great week and the start of Adventures in Holland.  I finally got my photos loaded in my computer and spent the afternoon editing some at my “office” across the street while sipping on Mint Tea and having my yogurt for breakfast.  It is almost 3 pm and I’m wasting a beautiful day. Break time.

Peter and Jeannette have been close friends for almost 30 years.  They have always been special people who mean a lot to me.  The days here have been a pleasure in this great neighborhood on Rooseveltlaan.
The weather has been fantastic and I’ve been out everyday walking around this great city of Amsterdam.  I’ve lost track of what I’ve been doing but today the weather changed into overcast, rain , and cool temperatures. It continued for the whole week while I got rained on and chilled.  I spent the last two afternoons at the Casino Poker table…making $50 Euros one day…losing $150 Euros the next. That ended my fun at the table.

I tried a few new places and visited the Jordan area of Amsterdam…the old Jewish quarter. Watched a few Outdoor Chess games and just meandered about. The following is last week in Amsterdam:

Amsterdam Calliope

Glass Recycle

Breakfast Poached Eggs on Ratatouille

Vape to Experience Herbs and Spices

Creative Menu

Jeannette ordered in some Tuna Steaks with Oyster Starters one evening and a nice salad.

Chess?

School is out.

Vietnamese Coffee on the way around town….

Jeannette made some delicious Mussels for dinner one evening then last night we ordered in an Indonesian Dinner that was so tasty!

Yesterday the Sun came out so I headed for Dam Square and the Niewe Kirk…New Church for the 90th Birthday ..one year celebration…of Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday with belongs of hers that Lee Strasberg inherited on her death. He kept them in storage for 40 years then when he died, his daughter sold them at auction. Now they are on exhibit at the Church, as appropriate venue.

There wasn’t really a lot to see but it gave the appearance of a lot. Her baby cup, stockings, old photos, fake eyelashes, Sweater, etc.  I watched the 90 minute documentary then left.  Photos were limited. It did bring back a lot of memories.

I made a trip down Amsterdam’s “Rodeo Drive” to buy some coffee for Peter and Jeannette.

Coffee Anyone….
….and that was only one side of the street!

The   temperature has dropped about 10%.  Tonight Peter and Jeannette are taking me out for my birthday I think.  I better post this and save the last few days for my last Post.

HOLLAND…LAST DAYS

Well I celebrate my Birthday tonight and plan one more trip before my departure.

Kind of like Uber Taxi

Peter and Jeannette arranged a Taxi to take us to WINK , a really nice restaurant where they had reservations.  The owner welcomed us and sat us while taking our drink order. The place was very small, 32 seats, and very attractively decorated.  The owner and one assistant managed the dining room while the Chef was busy preparing and also helped serve the food. We never ordered anything…just told him how many courses we wanted and sat back while he explained each course as it arrived. WINKs Menu

Celery Root, Raspberry Coulis, and some other stuff.

Scallop with Tangerine Creme and something else.

Leeks,Arugula, and something else?

Chantilly Mushroom Puree…and something else but really good stuff.

Peter’s Duck…and well you know.

Vanilla Panacotta with Carmel and Chocolate sauce…and…

Four different Dutch Cheeses with Homemade Mustard and Bread

Raspberry Tart with Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream and “Melba Sauce”

View from outside.

It was outstanding very small portions with assorted complimentary flavors. It was the best meal I had ever had.  There were so many different ingredients I couldn’t keep up with it nor can I explain exactly what I ate. We retired shortly after returning home.

Chef leaving on her Bike

That morning my Chocolate Brownie Cake was waiting with my coffee and a nice card, Dutch chocolates and a fine bottle of  Spanish Riojo greeted me.  Later that day, Sanna, Jeannette’s daughter stopped in with a bottle of Italian Proscecci for me.  Bart, another old friend showed up to wish me a Happy Birthday.  That evening we ordered Italian food for a change.  It was excellent…but I forgot to take any photos.

Smiling Sanna..her family is hosting a Kurdish Refugee from Syria

My trip to Rotterdam was cancelled when Pim told me he was in Belgium and wouldn’t return until next week.  I decided to stay close to home as the weather, thought sunny, was COLD and windy. I took the afternoon and attended an exhibition at the Hermitage Art Museum, a very nice building and gallery.

The exhibit was Catherine the Greatest.  A collection of Catherine the Great , the Russian Ruler during the 19th century.  A remarkable women with a lust for affection, she had 12 known lovers, not much by today’s standards but still quite a number.  She arranged a coup and deposed her husband as ruler.

I stopped for some “Dutch Pea Soup” and Dutch Pancakes after.  It was not what the picture on the menu showed so I went to Mulligan’s Irish Pub for a wee Pint to fill me up.  Brian , the young man I met the last time I was there, arrived and bought me a beer before I left.  We had a nice chat, then I caught the Tram back just as Peter and Jeannette were finishing their dinner. Tomorrow is a do nothing day then the next day I pack and the following day depart.

Today I tried Islanda , a local restaurant that Jeannette had been recommending since I arrived and it was great for breakfast, Yogurt, Oatmeal, Dutch Pancakes, Eggs, fresh Juice, Latte, etc.  I picked up my laundry and packed then this evening Jeannette served great Chicken Curry on Rice with some Ben and Jerry Double Chocolate Ice Cream with Whipped cream…nice end to my last night.  I think I added even more pounds on this trip then I already had!
I finished my packing this morning and visited Islanda again for breakfast. I will catch the bus or Tram, to the train station and head for the airport around 2 pm…gives me time to say goodbye and plenty of time to catch the plane to Madrid.  Good-Bye Amsterdam, Holland.

MADRID AND ON TO AMSTERDAM

Unpacking was now routine.  Anxious to see some of the familiar Puerto de Sol before dark I relaxed over a Chai Latte in a street Cafe and watched the world go by.   Walking back to my room, leisurely browsing the hundreds of restaurant offerings I ended up at BACOA, a specialty unique Hamburg place for their Classico Hamburg to go.  When I settled back in at my room, the TV wouldn’t work, not a major problem but I don’t like paying for a service I can’t receive. The night clerk offered no help but said the maid would fix it tomorrow.  The food was good and my internet connection worked well so I was content.
Saturday morning bike race in the center of Spain…with breakfast at one of the local cafes

I got a really nice sleep and was to meet Pilar for lunch today so had coffee at Dunkin Donuts while checking my email.  Pilar reminded me our lunch was for the 18th and today was the 17th, her work day. I decided to return to my room and then go on a city tour BUT my maid hadn’t fixed the TV or the shower as I had requested.  I went to the lobby so she could at least clean the room but she was busy doing reception, other rooms, complaints and requests.
Finally she got my room cleaned, I changed and headed for Retiro Park, one of my favorite places in Madrid.  It was a wonderful day.  A passing lady noticed my hat and yelled “Viva Mexico”.  I got the most exercise I’ve had since leaving Mexico in April.  I walked a lot of miles but took lots of breaks also. First my left ankle was killing me until I loosened my shoestrings.  Then it was the sole of my left foot.  I was taking breaks to sit every 50 yards! Then, being a bit dyslectic, I kept going in the opposite direction from what my GPS Google Map said until I ended up at the opposite end of where I wanted to exit, where I met a lovely young jogger at the park map trying to figure a way to get where we wanted to go without leaving the beautiful park.

Line at the Prado Museum

I pointed to the Map. Aqui.  She said are you American…Si…er yes…I’m from Nebraska, then jogged off.  I followed and saw her disappear into the park wishing I could have went with her. My problem was I didn’t want to leave the park until I found a bathroom. Free in the park but I have to pay in a place of business to use the bathroom and I was trying to save my money so I could afford a really nice glass of Spanish Wine. I found my way out of the park and to the Botanical Gardens BUT the entrance was on the other side. I took a few more breaks and finally made it.  The map showed a beautiful lush park with more to see than I had time for.  It was only 1/2 Euro for us Honored Citizens and I was tempted but my feet said NO.  Monday would be great and maybe time to take in the Prado Museum again.

I decided a battery operated bicycle would be a good investment…I could drive on the main drag with it as long as I stayed in the bike lane, see all of Retiro park in have the time and return with enough energy to take in a play or something? I made a note to ask Pilar, she is a cyclist , about that tomorrow when we have lunch.

I made it to the Hostel Victoria, lightened my load and headed for the Puerto de Sol but got lost on the way???  I don’t know how but Feldman’s Hot Dog stand caught my attention.  I made a note for later then got back on track and after maneuvering the crowded Puerto de Sol I arrived at the Plaza Mayor.  None of the restaurants appealed to me as they all had the same menu with photos posted outside….all exactly the same.  I was taking some photos when a man approached me and started speaking Spanish…are you from Mexico…this is the second time when I wore my cap from Mexico.  He spoke English and I now realize the other man was conveying the same information.  The Statue of the Horse with King Phillip the 3rd in the Plaza Mayor was a gift from Mexico.  It is not notable as the style was not artistic…but if I go to the Palace, there is another gift of another statue similar of King Phillip the 4th that is done in Gothic style and is considered the best.  The other man was telling me about the Statue of a man on a Horse that was in the Puerto de Sol that was also supposed to have been a gift from Mexico.  I’ll have to Google it.  Both men were around my age and the last mentioned that these statues were gifts to Spain when Spain was one of the most powerful Nations in the world….but alas that is not the case today. Spain is in trouble, he said.

The Puerto de Sol Horse

Puerto de Sol Bear

I decided to try and make it over to the Palace to photograph this magnificent statue when as I exited the Plaza Mayor I encounter the fabulous Madrid Market from hundreds of years ago.  I forgot about how nice it was when I saw lines of people entering the Market , so followed to see the attraction.  Most of the entire Market had been converted to Tapas Bars, Cheese Bars, Wine Bars, Sushi Bars, Seafood Bars, Oyster Bars, Beer Bars….it was heaven.  I ate oysters, tapas, seafood cocktails, drank wine, drank some more wine…and toddled home full and happy with plans to return.

Pilar..pointing the way

Canned Seafood…etc

Pilar, my Spanish High School Teacher, friend that I met when she visited me about 8 years ago in New River, met me for lunch to today.  She gave me a tour of her neighborhood nearby where we stopped for Vermouth “On Tap” and free Tapas.  It wasn’t far from me and very enjoyable but PACKED with Spaniards. We walked over to the San Miguel Market where I was last night and had some more Tapas…then walked back to where she lived and had lunch at a sidewalk cafe. We both had salads and Moussaka.  Neither were that great but we had a nice day together and enjoyed renewing our friendship.
I returned and booked my room for my return to Madrid and flight to Phoenix.
I also sent notification to Peter and Jeannette in Amsterdam of my arrival. I’m looking forward to seeing them and being back in Holland.
I ventured out later for a snack and a walk. While enjoying my Tapas, I noted two couples from NY that had been to a Play called Swingers.  The woman was all over the other woman, stroking her hair and touching her while still snuggled with her husband.  The other woman was uncomfortable but polite while her husband was ready to leave.   Now back to an early night. Lots to do tomorrow.
Monday, Monday….oh I was all set to go when I broke my glasses for the 2nd time this trip so super glued them back together again.  I also got Tom Ware’s blog, one of our Anglos at Vaughan Town, so I will post it here for your reading pleasure.Tom’s Blog
Last night I turned on Madrid TV station at 10 pm and there was one hot lady doing one good tease on another naked lady’s large nipples…then going down on her with more passion than any porn I’ve seen on the net. Then a flashback to a Catholic girl’s school where she was being called into the Head Mistress’s office and being punished for some offense. The punishment was get naked and be spanked…really hard core.  Then her classmate who was next in line went for her’s but after hearing the screams…she decided to turn the table on the Head Mistress by being the aggressor by being submissive but flirting…so both just had a great time. Then the first ran away to Madrid then lonely on the street got an offer from a rich handsome man to stay at his mansion…well I fell asleep after the Maid drew her bath among other things. Not because I wasn’t interested but I could have make it better.
Then today I had to get some long underwear for Amsterdam after I saw the weather report. I had tops but thought a bottom might be prudent. I visited Cortes Ingles , a huge upscale department store and arrive on the third floor menswear , undergarment department.  The Male Manager ignored me but his female assistant was curious when I told her 28 Euros for one pair of bottom long johns was ridiculous. She agreed and returned with a box of 14 Euro bottom long johns that were not on display.  I pawed through them but they looked small for my height so asked for XL but they didn’t have them.  She pointed out that they were ALL cotton…so I paid 14 Euros to stay warm in Amsterdam.
I then went to the 7th or top floor Cafeteria for breakfast, determined to have a healthy bowl of fruit salad , juice, and coffee.  But no where on the way were any Spanish restaurants offering fruit salad but I felt sure this upscale Department store’s cafeteria would…they didn’t. I settled for another Ham and Cheese Sandwich but with Illy Coffee.

As I was paying the 3.25 Euro bill, (this time NO tip thanks to Pilar’s advice…they get a good salary and don’t expect tips) my glasses broke again.  Now I know I super glue is not the answer so I left for a Pharmacy and a pair of cheap reading glasses…if you can call 12 Euros cheap.  I had three pair at home, and three pair of back up glasses too…but three more weeks before reaching home.  They didn’t have the style I wanted so I walked out looking very gay in a two tone color pair of reading glasses that made me dizzy.
I headed for the Botanical Gardens which was so awesome, peaceful, beautiful and relaxing I really didn’t want to return.

There was a Photo exhibit of well nothing.  This female photographer took photos of nothing in order to focus on nothing and bring it to life?  I had hoped to maybe understand what she was trying to convey so studied every photo looking for something…empty trash bags really didn’t come to life for me…so I moved on to another painter’s exhibit that was mostly flowers and really impressed me.  She also had paper machete statues with her art and incorporated it into furniture.  Her prices were reasonable but it was the first day of her exhibit and she wasn’t ready to sell anything.  Of course I don’t need anything anymore but might frame a couple photos I took.

My tour of the Gardens took up 3 hours before I decided to head for the Tapas Bar that Pilar took me to yesterday for cheap eats and Sweet Vermouth. I climbed what seemed a Mountain to get there while taking frequent rest stops along the way until I arrived to a closed sign.

The Horse by the Palace

Then I remembered the man who suggested I go to the Palace Real or Santa Ana to see the one statue of the horse and rider given to King something or other the 4th by Mexico that was one of the best in all the world.  After traveling back to the Plaza Major, the San Miguel Plaza , then on through a Maze of streets I reached the Palace to discover a waiting line and admission prices. I went to information and discovered the horse was nearby in the Palace Park so took my pictures but was too exhausted to walk uphill all the way home so decided to take the Opera Metro stop to the Sol Metro…but saw a Costa Coffee Cafe advertising the most impressive cup of coffee ever. I asked for the most impressive cup of coffee ever and the Cashier was perplexed…Cappuccino, Latte, large , small, espresso…I replied no just the most impressive cup of coffee you have…black and for here.  I wasn’t as good as Lilly but came a close second so I ordered a Brownie and blew my diet. I then took the Metro to Sol and for dinner I went to Feltman’s Hot Dog stand.  He invented the Hot Dog in 1850 ish in NYC.  I ordered the NYC Hot Dog for 3 Euros and left full for Tapa’s and Booze close to home.

My nice Waitress from the Philippines served me a nice Riojos Wine with Olives and Cheese…then a Sweet Vermouth with Chorizo, then another , then another Riojos with Chips…I left satisfied to discover I leave tomorrow. I read the calendar wrong but the hotel didn’t.  Now I’m packing and hopefully will get in a museum tomorrow before I head for the airport.

MELS DINER

Frieda and Diego

I did but it wasn’t until 3 pm so too late so headed to pick up my bags and made the airport early after taking the subway. The plane touched down at Schiphol Airport around 11 pm.

I bought my ticket but while waited for the train, I realized I forgot to have it stamped at the entrance to the track so ask this kind gentleman to watch my bag a minute and hurried upstairs to the entrance, stamped the ticket and returned to watch our train leave without us.  I felt bad for the guy but we took the next train but my stop wasn’t on that train so had to go into the center of Amsterdam then take the Tram to the apartment.  I arrived after Midnight but they were waiting to greet me.  We had a drink and I retired to my  room to discover a bottle of wine waiting with my hash pipe and hash from 3 years ago.  Some things never change.

Breakfast

Train station

The next morning I had coffee then left for the train station to get my Chip-kart updated for another 5 years and to add some credit to it. I walked all around Amsterdam until late in the afternoon when I ended up at Mulligans for a Pint of Guinness and caught Miriam the owner just leaving.

We chatted a bit and the same bartender was there with one other customer. His name was Brian and his mother was American and his father Dutch. He knew a lot about Mexico, Spain, Vietnam…for a young man.  He said history was a hobby of his. I returned in time for dinner.  Hamburgs and Cole slaw, delivered by the BurgerMiester and the best I’ve ever had!

The weather was unusually warm and sunshine so I took off again but stopped at Broers across the street for Yogurt, fruit and Musiela.

I ventured to the Bulldog Cafe and bought a lighter and some Marijuana then ended the afternoon at my favorite bar on Walstraat near Peter and Jeannette’s but it had sold and the new owners did nothing but drive off the old customers and paint the place so I left. Jeannette had prepared a Tangine of Moroccan spices, Lamb and vegetables with a nice bread.  It was heaven.  We had a nice sweet melon after with wine of course.

I met with Ruth, a SERVAS member in long standing at UK-SERVAS who was visiting Amsterdam. We met at the train station at noon and took a tram to the Museumplein to see a Warhol-Bansky exhibition.  First we visited the Stadtick Contemporary Art Museum.

Ruth was very knowledgeable about art but this Modern Art never attracted my appreciation.

We left without seeing the whole museum and went to the smaller exhibit in an old home.  The exhibit was small and took little time to see.

Ruth and Queen Beatrix

The Wildshut restaurant and outdoor cafe was close and it was late.  We had dinner there and Ruth returned to see more of the Van Gogh museum she missed the day before.
I was determined to walk home so headed out in the opposite directions.  I got to our neighborhood a bit early so stopped into another new place called TapZuid.

A converted Suriname Restaurant that now had 20 beers on tap plus imports from the states as well as organic wines and nice snacks.  The place was packed.  When I arrived at home, they had just finished dinner so we watched a bit of TV and I retired around 9:30.

Saturday proved another glorious day and the end of this episode of my transition to Amsterdam.  I visited a Vietnamese Pho Restaurant and …had Pho.
Then crossed the street to the Saturday Market but after bumping into people and not seeing anything that interested me I returned to get my computer and headed for my “office” across the street for some Mint tea and play on the computer while listening to Bob Dylan, “Mr. Tambourine Man.” and a great music sound and selection.
